Art Clubs

Book Club - Hello Sunset Apollos! Book Club's main goal is to promote reading amongst the different age groups here at Sunset and in our society. If you enjoy reading and sharing what you have read with other people, Book Club is the right club for you! We will also be giving special emphasis on genres such as poetry and literature. Breakthrough Junior Challenge Club - In the Breakthrough Junior Challenge Club, you will be able to create a 3 minute video explaining any scientific concept you are interested in to then enter the Breakthrough Junior Challenge. buildOn Club - In buildOn Club, we're going to be working towards breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy, and low expectations one school at a time. Each member will be using different fundraising methods to work towards our collective club goal of $30,000. This $30,000 will all go towards building a school in a developing country, and for those who are able to go, in the following summer of 2021, we'll spend two weeks in that country building the school we funded. Not only will we get to make a direct and positive impact on others' lives, but we'll learn more about different cultures in the process. CyberBORN - Hey Apollos! We are CyberBORN, a nonprofit service club dedicated towards advocating for underprivileged children both in the U.S. and in three international countries. We have many service projects that we do throughout the year. Along with service projects, we help sponsor education, food, and other necessities for over 60 children. Although our focus is more global outreach, we also manage more local projects. You may have heard about our free virtual classes for elementary students over the summer (we held 160 classes for students of all ages). Nonetheless, if you join our club, you’ll be able to contribute to a variety of projects ranging from tutoring, leading projects as a project leader, being a youth activist, mask-making, food drives and so much more! Health Awareness Club - The Health Awareness club is about educating others about health through a creative newsletter. Spreading awareness about health motivates others to improve and maintain their health, prevent disease, and reduce risky behaviors. Helping Hands - Helping Hands is a community service club that aims to help vulnerable people in our community: children with pediatric illnesses and senior citizens in assisted living communities. Everybody Athletics - EBA's mission is to create a lasting impact on the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of adults with disabilities through group athletic training. Learn To Be - Do you like to volunteer? Are you comfortable with online tutoring kids in reading, writing, or math? Then Sunset Learn To Be is the club for you! In this club, you will be able to tutor online to underprivileged kids in grades kindergarten through 12th grade. Me2u Club - We are bringing an incredible foundation to Sunset!! Period - PERIOD @ SHS is a chapter of Period: The Menstrual Movement. We advocate for menstrual equity and hold drives to provide equitable access to period products. We work with other PERIOD chapters and the national organization. Our first meeting will be on October 19th, and after that on the first Monday of every month. Students Against Sexual Oppression - a youth-led sexual violence advocacy and awareness based club. We fundraise for RAINN the largest anti-sexual violence network, but our main focus is on youth and community education. We partner with many organizations like the Sexual Assault Resource Center and SAFER. Sunset UNICEF (United Nations International Children's Fund) - Sunset UNICEF is Sunset's chapter of the the international United Nations International Children's Fund! Black Student Union - We create a safe space to talk about the African-American experience and we plan fun and informative events. Meetings are every Thursday from 3:00-4:00pm. Embrace Our Cultures - The goal of EOC is to embrace our cultures and exercise our leadership skills. No matter where you're from, this club presents a space for everyone to explore and expand their knowledge about the world. With that in mind, we participate in tutoring younger students, organizing immersive cultural projects within our community, and fundraising for global outreach foundations. Jewish Student Union (JSU) - Shalom! MCC (Multicultural Club) - Multicultural club is a club where individuals of different backgrounds can come into a safe space where they can learn about another's culture through food, games, and other fun experiences. SISA (Sunset Indian Student Association) - SISA plans to bring the Indian community at Sunset HS together by educating Indians/Non-Indians about our culture. Sunset MSA - An organization dedicated to unifying/strengthening Sunset’s Muslim community as well as providing a safe environment for Muslim and Non-Muslim students to discuss Islam and connect with each other. We hope to achieve this goal through community service and activism, educating our members about the religion of Islam, and continuing to strive for a better environment for students on campus. Through this club, our aim is to abolish negative stereotypes of Muslims and promote an accurate understanding of Islamic principles and ideals. Amnesty International - Amnesty International is the largest grassroots human rights organization in the world. Our goal is to demand human rights for all people. DECA - Students enrolled in a class in the Marketing & Business Education Department are afforded the opportunity to join the Sunset High School DECA Club. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges. Ethics Bowl - Welcome to Sunset's first ever Oregon High School Ethics Bowl team! In Ethics Bowl, we're given a list of ethical dilemmas that we have to discuss with each other as a team, coming up with a perspective on the issue that addresses the possible points of each side of the problem. History Bowl - History Bowl is a history-themed trivia competition, similar to Quiz Bowl or Science Bowl. We meet once a week to practice for competitions by playing through history trivia. HOSA - Interested in the medical professions? Then this is the perfect club for you! HOSA gives you the opportunity to participate in events from pathophysiology to nursing assistant at the international level. The goal is to get ready for the 3 day state conference in the spring, where you can hang out with your friends and participate in your events. Place in the top five at SLC, and you could go to the International Conference in Disneyworld! JSA (Junior Statesmen of America) - The Junior State of America (JSA) was created by and for young people interested in what happens around them - from politics, to how government works, and contributing to their community. MUN (Model United Nations) - Model United Nations offers students the opportunity to meet and work with nearly 100 of your other students and friends to discuss and explore world issues in a fun way! MUN allows you to explore world issues through a reenactment of the United Nations. All of this is capped off with a two night, three day trip to the University of Oregon in Eugene in March, where you will meet with 1,500 other students from schools all across Oregon! Throughout the entire year, you will have hundreds of opportunities to have fun, engage with your friends, meet many new friends, and learn! SAGA (Sexuality And Gender Acceptance) - We are SAGA, the Sexuality And Gender Acceptance club! We aim to build a loving and safe community for all people, specifically those identifying as LGBTQ+. We discuss current as well as historic events, work towards improving our school, and support each other. We hope to continue all of these activities throughout the school year, even though our meetings will not be in person. Sunset Investment Club - Our goal is to provide a space for students with an interest in finance to connect and discuss. We plan to hold a simulation stock competition amongst the club members to get students excited about stocks and experiment with different trading and investing strategies. Sunset Speech And Debate - Speech and Debate is a club encompassing two activities - speech and debate. Speech events include professional speaking and interpretive acting without props. Debate involves a current event topic, and students develop arguments for both sides. Team meetings serve as practice for tournaments, where students compete against speakers and debaters from other schools. Science Clubs

Physics Club - Students who are interested in physics can get the opportunity to test their skills through competitions such as Physics Bowl and Physics Olympiad. Meetings will help students go over what they need to prepare for the exam, and potential resources that students can utilize. Science Ambassadors - The Science Ambassadors Club is designed around a mentorship program in which high school students are “matched” with mentees that will be the focus of their individual teaching efforts for a full academic year. In response to COVID-19 this year, our Science Ambassadors program has planned a new format, where we will focus on online tutoring for middle school students 3 times a month in math, physics, chemistry, and biology. Once a month, we will provide online social meetings to create interactive, fun science experiments for mentees; our mentors will design and test simple experiments for these meetings. We'll learn about the National Science Bowl competition next year, talk about our favorite science topics, and write & practice questions of our own! Science Research Club - In the Science Research Club, you will be able to conduct your own science research project using the scientific/engineering process and present your findings at the Regional Fair in February. If you advance all the way to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, you will have a chance to win the Gordon E. SHS Climate Change Club - If you are interested in how to become more environmentally friendly, join the Climate Change Club! We hope to get our club members more involved this year by by doing things like recycling drives, celebrating environmental holidays, getting involved with our student government and leadership to spread awareness school-wide, and much more! Sunset Environmental Leaders - The time for action is now! Sunset Environmental Leaders is a place where members will work as a team to create change within Sunset. The focus of the club is to shine a spotlight on areas of improvement within Sunset, and to take action to make our school a more environmentally friendly and sustainable place. This will be brought about through teamwork, collaboration, and strong initiative from members. Outdoor Adventure Club - If you want to spend more time outside, mostly hiking but much more, you should join Outdoor Adventure Club! Sunset High School Ski Team - Sunset’s ski team is a place for all, new and old skiers alike. We compete in ski races against other schools in the metro league with the top teams getting to compete at state against schools from all over Oregon. Sunset’s ski team strives to create a supportive and fun environment. We plan to have a full season with new guidelines in place in order to adapt to covid restraints. We will have dryland training outdoors, limited on mountain training, and a full race schedule. As of now races will most likely be on Wednesday afternoons to accommodate to the limit of skiers allowed each day. - Link to sign up:

Ultimate Frisbee Club - Once a week we get to scrimmage each other in awesome games of Ultimate Frisbee. Sunset Drone Racing - Build, repair, and fly FPV-styled racing drones with Sunset Drone racing. Students will learn about how to build and operate drones with the option to join in-school and local drone races. Machine Learning Club (MLC) - The Machine Learning Club (MLC) is an interactive club based around machine learning, deep learning, and AI. Participants will be introduced to basic topics in the field of artificial intelligence, work on open-source projects, participate in competitions, and possibly write a paper related to a topic of their choice.
