COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT

GARAGE CONVERSIONS AND ACCESSORY DWELLING UNITS

Three years ago, the State required all cities and counties to allow a second unit on a single-family lot, called an “accessory dwelling unit” or ADU. In the last two years Temple City has seen an increase in the number of unpermitted garage conversions and backyard construction of ADUs. Even if an ADU meets the zoning requirements, building permits are still required. Obtaining a building permit ensures that the construction meets life and safety standards. The City has seen cases where unpermitted construction has caused fires not only to the subject property but adjacent properties. Additionally, when a property owner goes to sell their property, if a buyer finds out that the work was done without a permit it often results in a reduction in the value of the property. To find out if a construction project has a building permit, please call the Building Permit Technician, Sylvia Robles at (626) 285-0488.
