Livin in religion, we can be an empty house. Living in Jesus Christ we are in fellowship with God and our spiritual house is genuine companionship with ourselves and with people.
Some of the busiest people can be the most empty of Christ. We can have a 'successful ministry' yet be living with an un-regenerated heart. Our work for Jesus is not Jesus. It is our work. Union with Him comes from desiring Him and inviting Him continually to be our life. He says 'My son, give me your heart.' With your heart in His heart He will pervade your life and you will multiply His life. We irrigate dry places with living water when we drink living water.
It is important to live in Jesus Himself rather than some distortion of Jesus and who He is meant to be for us. A false christ can be any substitute we have adopted in place of Jesus. In the West false christ's are not always demonic counterfeits of Christ. They are more subtle. They are more pernicious and devious because they have merged themselves with things that we have made sacred. Here they lie in wait in order to manifest themselves at critical moments. By living in the Spirit of Christ we encounter the fullness of Christ. We are not left orphans to encounter Him second or third hand, through another person, a denomination or a fellowship. He comes to us and lives in us. John wrote, 'We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ' 1 John 1.3 NLT.
When Jesus came among the believers following His resurrection, He brought with Him grace and peace. No performance mongering here. Just freedom and joy. Not so if we are running with a performance orientation. A PA is one of the things we have 'made sacred.' When the performance driven Believer hears about intimacy with God, intimacy becomes one more thing she must do. So she runs about striving to be an overcomer in order to earn intimacy with Jesus.
As Christian workaholics we insulate ourselves from God and commit ourselves to spiritual blindness.
We don't we have the cross so that we can make one of our own. We have it so that our burden is easy and light and we find rest in well-doing. You dont have to be your own Christ. Ever thought that a false christ might be you?!
Jesus is the only way, the new and living way to knowing God and being you in spirit and in truth.
They tyranny of that one more thing is the curse of religion. Should we live in the law we will shape Jesus and the new testament to fit our mind-set. But when Christ is our life there is nothing to do but to rest and agree with all that He has has done. By beholding and agreeing we become changed. Changed into a life-giver who needs only to be themselves. John writes, 'Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, will be with us in truth and love' 2 John 1.3 NIV.
