An Introductory and Explanatory Survey of the Bible - The Old Testament: Volume II Isaiah through the Intertestamental Era By W.R. Downing

An Introductory and Explanatory Survey of the Bible The Old Testament: Volume II Isaiah through the Intertestamental Era By W.R. Downing

This survey of the Bible is meant to be both introductory and explanatory, and used as a companion with bible study. An attempt has been made to make this Survey suitable for both the seminary student and the average reader. May both the student and reader learn and be challenged to progress in their knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, the use of suitable study tools and even some use of the original languages. This is Volume II and it covers Isaiah through the Intertestamental Era. W.R. Downing, Ph.D., D.D., has been a gospel minister for over 50 years. Currently he is the Pastor of Sovereign Grace Baptist Church of Silicon Valley and Director of the Pacific Institute of Religious Studies (P.I.R.S.) in Morgan Hill, CA.

Why We Don’t Use the Invitation System? (Altar Call) By W.R. Downing

Why We Don’t Use the Invitation System? (Altar Call) By W.R. Downing

This paper examines the use of the invitation system or the altar call. While we do not doubt the sincerity and love of those who use the altar call, does the Bible support this method? While we question the method, we love our Christian brethren and seek the unity which is described in Psalm 133. May the Lord use this study to reevaluate this method.

Lectures on Revivals of Religion A Series of Lectures on Revival in the Old and New Testament and in History By W.R. Downing

Lectures on Revivals of Religion A Series of Lectures on Revival in the Old and New Testament and in History By W.R. Downing

These “Lectures on Revival” were given, first, to define revival and distinguish it from modern “revivalism”. Second, to trace the history of God’s gracious dealings with His people and with unconverted sinners throughout the history of Christianity – to review for this generation what has been largely hidden or forgotten of the dealings of God with men. Third, to encourage God’s people to pray that God might once again “bare His mighty right arm and make His power known” in sending His Spirit in true revival and spiritual awakening.

In the Name of Jesus Oneness Pentecostalism & Jesus Only Baptism By Larry DeBruyn

In the Name of Jesus Oneness Pentecostalism & Jesus Only Baptism By Larry DeBruyn

The view of Oneness Pentecostalism is the subject of this booklet. The Pentacostal Movement uses the Acts passages to associate baptism "in the name of Jesus" to usurp the Trinitarian formula instituted by Jesus, thereby denying the authority of the One who is Lord. Assuming the authenticity of the Great Commission as coming from Christ, one cannot deny Trinitarian baptism on the one hand and uphold Jesus' authority on the other. "Jesus only" baptism is unacceptable to Bible believing and orthodox Christians because it excludes mention of the Trinity contained in Jesus's original command. The contents of this booklet are the result of many hours of study and reflection upon the biblical texts in question by Pastor Larry Debruyn. Believing in the authority of Scripture, Larry reveals what the Bible has to say in the four Acts passages that variously portray baptism "in the name of Jesus Christ."

God's Present of His Presence By Larry DeBruyn

God's Present of His Presence By Larry DeBruyn

Among contemporary evangelicals there's a lot of talk and publicity given to "encountering," becoming "intimate" with or seeking God's "presence." Often spelled with an upper case "P," evangelical Christians are now recommending a variety of ways, ancient and modern, to experience "Presence." Yet, the Bible teaches that our experiencing God's presence depends upon His initiation. We can no more manipulate God's presence in us than resurrect ourselves from the dead or seat ourselves with Him in heaven (Ephesians 2:1-10).

The Devil and the Church By E.M. Bounds (1835-1915)

The Devil and the Church By E.M. Bounds (1835-1915)

This booklet exposes the subtle and deceptive wiles of the devil in seeking to distract the church from its life and strength in Christ. Bound's experience both as pastor and prayer warrior qualifies him to address the sensitive subject of the devil and the church. He writes as a keen observer of the methods used to weaken and destroy the local assembly. One feels he is speaking about today's church rather than his own age of the mid-nineteenth century. The spiritual insights offered are timeless because the devil's goal is the same in every age: to seduce and weaken the church until it is rendered impotent, indifferent, and useless in fulfilling its spiritual purpose. The author in his straightforward style provides much needed insight for Christian soldiers of all true churches who desperately need to sustain spiritual life where it exists. He also sounds a clarion call to take back the church from the world and reverse the tide of apostasy now sweeping through many churches.

The World By J.C. Ryle (1816-1900)

The World By J.C. Ryle (1816-1900)

Avoiding worldliness is of vital importance to the Christian. It declares the inescapable duty to be separate from the world. This is the point which the Apostle Paul had in view when he wrote to the Corinthians, “Come out from among them and be separate.” This article is concise, comprehensive, and insightful in challenging the Christian to be chaste and holy in an unholy world.

The Bible Besieged Scripture & The Emergent Church, Charismatic, Hebrew Roots, Evangelical Contemplative, Movements By Larry DeBruyn

The Bible Besieged Scripture & The Emergent Church, Charismatic, Hebrew Roots, Evangelical Contemplative, Movements By Larry DeBruyn

Increasingly, evangelical-emergent leaders are viewing the Bible as "metaphor" - to be less than literal language from which the reader can subjectively derive personal spiritual meanings. This new interpretation method asserts that ignoring the nuances of metaphor makes the Bible unintelligible. Approaching the Bible only as metaphor demands assuming something about God's communication to man which is at odds with the plain meaning of the language and structure of Holy Scripture. The fact that many contemporary evangelical leaders and Christians seek "fresh" revelations from God indicates that they no longer consider Holy Scripture to be sufficient and authoritative in matters of faith (2 Tim. 3:16).

“When preaching and private talk are not available, you need to have a tract ready….Get good striking tracts, or none at all. But a touching gospel tract may be the seed of eternal life. Therefore, do not go out without your tracts.” - Charles Spurgeon
Prayer and Importunity by E.M. Bounds

Prayer and Importunity by E.M. Bounds

Importunate prayer is a mighty movement of the soul toward God. It is a stirring of the deepest forces of the soul, toward the throne of heavenly grace. It is the ability to hold on, press on, and wait. Restless desire, restful patience, and strength of grasp are all embraced in it. It is not an incident, or a performance, but a passion of soul. It is not a want, half-needed, but a sheer necessity.

“If religious biblical books are not widely circulated among the masses in this country, I do not know what is going to become of us as a nation. If truth is not spread, then error will be. If God and His Word are not known and received, the devil and his works will gain attention and dominate. If evangelical books do not reach every town and village, the pages of corrupt and immoral literature will. If the power of the gospel is not felt throughout the length and breadth of this land, anarchy and tyranny, depravity and misery, corruption and darkness will reign without relief or end.” - Daniel Webster

"Our desire is that the Holy Spirit, who is the Divine Revealer and Interpreter of Christ and His truth, may impart to your hearts a sober, spiritual and sanctifying receptivity of His Word — abasing self, and exalting Christ! Our intention is to unfold and illustrate the Lord Jesus Christ in the relation in which He stands to His people — to unveil His glory, beauty, and fullness— to define the close bond of union that unites to Him all His people — and to bring you into a more personal realization of what Christ is to you, and of what you are to Christ." - Octavius Winslow
