Minority Housestaff Association

The OU-Tulsa Minority Housestaff Association held a Virtual happy hour for the fourth year applicants. 12 students were in attendance with 4 of our current residents. Applicants from IM, OB, EM, FM, and Surgery programs had several questions and were put in touch with faculty from the respective programs. The MHSA also held a meet and greet dinner downtown at The Goat Bar & Kitchen on February 24th.

Congratulations to Syeachia Dennis, M.D., M.P.H., FAAFP - the new Assistant Dean for Equity and Community Engagement for the School of Community Medicine at OU- Tulsa

Dr. Dennis is an assistant professor in Family and Community Medicine, and previously served as director of Community Medicine Curriculum. In her new role, she will work with faculty members, residents, students, and staff to address social and structural issues affecting patients’ health in our community.

Her plan is to support the DEI efforts within graduate medical education, to develop an anti-bias curriculum track for medical students, and to increase community collaborations with organizations committed to advancing health equity in Tulsa and Oklahoma at large. These efforts all reflect the SCM goal of eliminating structural racism while at the same time foster the well-being for individuals and community health.

She then went on to complete a Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, FL.

Congratulations to Keith Mather, MD, Program Director in the Department of Pediatrics on being named the new Chair for the Department. Dr. Mather has served the Department of Pediatrics in several administrative roles, including Residency Program Director for the Pediatrics and Medicine-Pediatrics Programs, Vice-Chair for Education, and Interim Chair.
