It’s official, College is a part of cancel culture now and it’s all thanks to Google. Recently, Google announced their newest master plan, called “Google Grow”, which plans to help millions of people find jobs easier as well as create a Career program for those who are looking for certification in a certain field of work.
So what’s the catch? Nothing, no experience is required in order to enroll, which means those people who may have dropped out of high school and never had time to go back and get their GED can still have access to a career program and help them get the certifications they need to advance in their field of work.
So far, Google has released 5 different certificate programs, which include Data Analytics, IT Support, Project Management, UX Design, and Android Development. All of these programs can be started with a 7 day free trial and then only $39/month, which is way lower than any graduate program you could enroll in at any college in the U.S.
But can Google really shake things up and create a lasting impact in the educational world?
According to freshman Nolan Pham, absolutely not. Pham feels like there are some different options out there that would give the same benefits. “There are way better ways to get job certification and degrees so why would I use Google? There are literally thousands of companies that do the same thing”. Pham also doesn’t really see this program as a game changer either. “No, I don’t think it will have an impact on the educational system because of the amount of options that already exist and are better”.
Junior Iain Rojas has a more optimistic outlook on this new program, but overall feels like this program is not for him. “[would I personally use this?] no, I’m not very interested in the field of technology [but I’m sure many are]”. Rojas also feels like this program could really provide many opportunities for those who are less fortunate than others. “I think it opens doors to huge opportunities for brilliant students who just aren’t financially capable of paying for college, I feel like many brilliant minds could be created with this program”.
So far, it looks like this program has in a way, flown under the radar of most people. Very few students knew anything at all about this program, but from the responses given, it looks like this program does have a little bit of potential. All it needs is a spark.
