Irondequoit Business Students Earn Academic Honors at DECA State Career Conference 11 IHS Students Earn State trophies and qualify to compete at the DECA International Career Development Confernce

Irondequoit High School students applied their business knowledge they learned in the classroom in their respective DECA event at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. The 60th Annual New York State DECA Career Conference (SCC) was held February 26-28, 2020 and over 2,200 high school business students from all over New York State came to compete in over 50 different competitive events.

DECA, an international student organization, enhances the preparation for college and careers by providing co-curricular programs that integrate into classroom instruction, applying learning in the context of business, connecting to business and the community and promoting competition. Its student members leverage their DECA experience to become academically prepared, community oriented, professionally responsible, experienced leaders. Information about DECA can be viewed at www.newyorkdeca.com and www.deca.org.

Students choose an area of business that is of interest to them at the start of the school year and prepare to compete in an event related to that area through business classes and other resources available through DECA. Business classes at Irondequoit High School that incorporate DECA into the curriculum include College Accounting, College Business Law, Virtual Business Management, Entertainment Businesses, Sports Marketing, Career & Financial Management and International Business.

Most of these students qualified at the regional level to make it to this conference. Students can earn medals in their respective events by earning a top ten place for either their test, role play(s) or overall. Earning a trophy at SCC qualifies a student to compete in their respective event at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Nashville, TN at the end of April with over 15,000 other DECA business students from around the world.

I.H.S. DECA Advisors Lou DiCesare, Jeanine Lent and LaVon Bucciarelli and Tricia Taylor were extremely impressed by the wide variety of events (12) that students earned honors to compete in at the SCC. A total of 36 Top 10 medals were earned by Irondequoit HS students in either a test score, role play performance or overall top-10 recognition. Eleven I.H.S. students were national qualifiers by earning a trophy.

And as a bonus Irondequoit HS won the Lip Sync contest against 14 other schools. Andrew Bidwell, Matt McCullough, Lauren Day, Lauren Gangarossa and Sean Jarrett were the members if the I.H.S. winning team.

All students who competed are winners as they learned more about an area of business they are interested in, more about preparation, communication, teamwork, and leadership – whether or not they earned a medal or a trophy.
