George McGurn Candidate for Egremont Selectman

George McGurn and his wife, Mary, settled in North Egremont in 1977 first as second home owners and then in 1990 as full-time residents. George McGurn retired after a career at the local, Commonwealth, federal and international levels. He is an internationally recognized Professor of Management with hands-on experience in economic development, education, conflict resolution and cyber security. George McGurn is ready to put his decades of experience to work full-time on behalf of all residents of Egremont.

As your Selectman, George McGurn will be your advocate for the Preservation of Egremont's Legacy.

I am a candidate that will heed the legacy of prior Egremont generations, while bringing fresh insights and perspective to the job of governing our Town.

As your Selectman, George McGurn will be your advocate for the Education of Egremont's Youth.

Our future depends on the education of our youth. Providing them with the life skills they need, including education for citizenship, is the correct focus for our funding decisions. What if our community received School Committee support for the South Egremont School on condition that Egremont support high school consolidation with an emphasis on vocational training that fully utilizes the Mount Everett High School campus.

As your Selectman, George McGurn will be your advocate for Transparent and Open Government. He will foster Proactive Governance.

As your Selectman, George McGurn will be your advocate for a Resurgent Main Street in South Egremont.

Main Street, South Egremont, is a major gateway to the Berkshires. I appreciate its New England charm, but the loss of businesses and the failure of its geographic prominence to attract new business investment must be addressed.

Routes 23 East and 41 North run through the commercial district of Egremont and are both well-traveled routes leading into and away from the Berkshires. A priority is the recruiting of businesses that add to the Town's ambiance while contributing to the Town's tax base.

Long-term businesses anchor one end of Main Street and attest to its commercial viability.

As your Selectman, George McGurn will be your advocate for High-Speed Fiber to the Home and to Businesses.

High-speed internet connectivity is essential if we wish to foster business development and attract younger residents with families.

As your Selectman, George McGurn will be your advocate for the Environment, Farm and Land Conservation.

As your Selectman, George McGurn will be your advocate for Budgetary and Fiscal Responsibility

I will respect and guard Egremont's AAA bond rating. My track record in fiscal prudence and practices began with my reformation of New York City's budget during its 1970's fiscal crisis, continued through my deanship of Boston University's School Management and my overseas activities in privatizing the Georgian economy.

As your Selectman, George McGurn will be your advocate for Inclusive Citizen Participation, Balance and Civility in the Governance of Egremont.

I will listen to all sides of an issue, then build consensus around realistic choices. I will preserve what is best about Egremont and work to change only what can be made better.
