Bowdoin Field Hockey 2019 Season preview

The Bowdoin College field hockey team will open its 2019 season at the University of New England on Wednesday evening with a squad that boasts nine returning starters from a team that went 11-5 last year.

2018 Recap

The Polar Bears finished the 2018 season with their 19th consecutive trip to the NESCAC post-season, eventually falling 3-2 to Williams in the quarterfinals. Bowdoin opened its season on a 5-0 run before facing its first setback at Middlebury in late September. The team concluded the season with an 11-5 record and 6-4 mark in NESCAC action.

2019 Preview

The Polar Bears lose only two starters from last year’s team, returning breakout scoring threat Emma Stevens on the forward line and two-year starter Maddie Ferrucci in net. Kara Finnerty earned All-American honors following her junior season and returns after leading the team with ten assists in 2018.

Classmate and co-captain Elizabeth Growney rounded out the top three in scoring from last year as the trio of seniors looks to build on an impressive 3.5 goals per game average. The Polar Bears enter 2019 as the #15 team in the NFHCA Preseason Poll.

On the Schedule

Bowdoin begins the season with three straight road games, including a pair of NESCAC games at Amherst (Sep. 7) and Bates (Sep. 11). The Polar Bears open their home schedule at Ryan Field on September 14 when reigning national champion Middlebury comes to Brunswick. With seven NESCAC teams ranked in the top-20 in the country, the conference slate provides one of the most competitive schedules in Division III. The Polar Bears also host Wesleyan (Sep. 21), Hamilton (Oct. 5), Colby (Oct. 21), and Williams (Oct. 26) in key conference matchups.
