Congruency and Court Skills

What is our concept of congruency?

In this context it has nothing to do with math, it goes way beyond that...

What kind of congruency are we then talking about?

It has to do with your relations with everyone and with yourself.

Look at guy in the video, specially at his hands (first 30 seconds).

Congruency is on the relationship between his hands with the cards, nothing more than perfect understanding and symmetry between these.

"To be congruent means to be faithful to oneself, maintaining a logic and coherent relation between what we feel, what we say, and what we do." -Carl Rogers

Self confidence, understanding, external relations; it has to do with everything around us, how we manage life and what we want from it.

¿How to know if you are being congruent?

> How to start <

Start with yourself, with the utmost potential.

Go on! take the test!

Might look like a silly question, but it actually shows how much confidence you have in yourself

Has something been bothering you lately?

Are you always showing your unique personality?

Not shy at all? or yes, indeed?

Do you get along with everyone? Do you like to meet new people?

All the questions relate on your reaction to them, if you felt safe and positive with the first answer you gave to each one, congratulations, you may have a developed congruency.

But if you started having a doubt with one, you might have a flaw in that aspect of your congruency, as always, either related to people or with yourself.
If you think you are already congruent, don't forget you can always get better; and if not...

Mindset, confidence, determination; its always about striving, developing, and achieving.

Be the best YOU, you can be.

Congruency starts from oneself, always. It's not a matter of being better than others, it's about you developing what you feel, what you say, and what you do.

How to apply it externally?

  • We perceive the environment,
  • we build our inner maps,
  • we explain through habits.

Visuals: "Can you see what im trying to explain?"

Auditory: "Do you understand what I'm saying?"

Kinesthetic: "Let me show you what I'm trying to say"

Always focus on which type of public is listening to you, creating Rapport is the best way to externalize your congruency.

Moving to court...

Court skills

What does a lawyer need in order to succeed in court?

Think like one, act like one.

There is a set of skills that lawyers apply in their daily life, and besides being outstandingly congruent when they express themselves in court, they divide each step of their communication to achieve their main goal: winning the argument.

Play the role: you are in an important debate, convince yourself and everyone from what you say and believe.

Necessary skills
  • Active listening and speaking: time to work
It's all up to your performance; set your mind directly to the issue, take notes, build arguments, react smart and fast, look for mistakes on the rhetoric of the counterpart and always be aware of the relevant elements in the room.
  • Time management: start to determine the best of your performance
Control your time when exposing and intervening, you don't want to bore anyone. Always go straight to the point, being direct and not going around the issue is the best way to convince people and for them to be fond of your speech.
  • Critical thinking: your everyday for many things as a lawyer
Stressful situations are alway there, its like deactivating a ticking bomb. Learn how to think under pressure, to take the right decision in the less time possible. Don't overthink, focus on the issue and not on irrelevant factors.

Monitoring: Take over the room at everytime

Be aware of your audience when talking, create rapport and build confidence in your communication. Express yourself in a way everyone understands what you are saying. Try to analyze the room to know if you are catching everyone's attention.
  • Boldness: improvising is always part of the development of a court case
Stressful situations are always there. Create a great strategy and try to save your best argument for the end. Learn how to improvise, you are there either to win or to lose, you never know if the other part will have something to overcome your arguments, so prepare yourself for every hypothetical situation.
  • Confidence: Don't doubt on your performance
Apply emotional intelligence, stay calm but active. Control your nerves and take over the situation, you will always be prepared. Never let the other part intimidate you, that will always mean they fear you for doing better than them.
  • Persuasion: credibility is your main weapon
Develop your arguments logically and thoughtfully, don't say nothing than can be used as a comeback for the other part. Think before you speak and make people believe in what you say.

How are lawyers so good at what they do?

Learn. Practice. Improve.

Some people are born with these skills, others have to learn about them, but everyone has the chance of developing them to their utmost potential, you already know how to.

What are then lawyers, with all these skills?

Lawyers are congruent.

Finding peace between what to say, feel and do its the best thing lawyers do. They create special relations with everyone in their job, from clients to judges, by giving the proper amount of empathy, confidence and respect to each one of them.

You already know what it takes to develop your congruency, and how to properly apply it along the necessary court skills of a lawyer.

Start practicing, even in your daily life;

  • in order to develop your communication,
  • in order to conquer your goals,
  • in order to become a better professional.

Do it the best way you can, make people understand you the best way possible, love what you do, and always fight for the good cause.
