MAROON MADE Volume 1, Issue 4 Sept 11-17, 2017 Recap & LOOKING AHEAD

Only three teams -- men's and women's soccer & volleyball -- competed last week for UChicago, Maroon football and cross country teams taking a bye week.

UChicago Women's Soccer (6-0) -- now ranked #2 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III Poll -- concluded another perfect week as the Maroons topped Carroll, 5-0, and Milwaukee School of Engineering, 5-0.

For the season, the Maroons are outshooting opponents by a 87-7 margin in shots on goal and 166-20 in total defense.

Senior Madori Spiker netted two goals in the Maroons' 5-0 win at MSOE and had another in the 5-0 win over Carroll last week.



Rookie Claudia Hodgetts netted her first career goal in the Maroons' 5-0 win at MSOE Saturday.
Freshman forward Katie Jasminski continued strong offensive start to the year, adding a goal against Carroll and an assist at MSOE to bring her season point total to eight, which is tied with teammate Madori Spiker for second on the squad. Junior forward Jenna McKinney leads UChicago with 11 points (5 goals, 1 assist).
Senior defender Whitney Cargile is one big reason the Maroons' defense has been so dominant, holding opponents to just SEVEN shots on goal in six games.


Max Lopez earned his second-straight UAA Athlete of the Week honor last Monday after netting four goals and an assist in wins over St. Norbert (Sept. 8) and #22 Carthage (Sept. 9)

UChicago Men's Soccer -- now ranked #3 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll -- shut out two more opponents last week, winning at #19 Loras 3-0 & at Aurora 6-0.

The Maroons have produced at least THREE goals in five-straight matches and are outscoring opponents by a 25-3 margin through their first six matches.

Junior forward Matthew Koh recorded the game-winning goal and added an assist in the Maroons' 3-0 shutout at #19 Loras Sept. 13.

Freshman Emma Griffith earned her first career UAA Athlete of the Week honor last Monday after a strong week at setter for the Maroons Sept. 4-10.

The UChicago Volleyball team had a solid week, going 2-2 overall to improve to 7-3 on the year. The Maroons topped Concordia-Moorhead and host Wisconsin Eau-Claire in the weekend's Nike/Eastbay Classic Sept. 15-16.

Sarah Muisenga, who totaled 34 kills and 30 kills across three matches, was selected to the Nike/Eastbay All-Tournament Team along with setter Emma Griffith (bottom). Both helped the Maroons to a 2-1 performance over the weekend.




Sophomore middle hitter Madeleine Bol has been solid at the net after missing the entire 2016 season with an injury. So far in 2017, she has 23 block assists and six solo blocks to lead the team. Last week, she was selected as the first WAA Athlete of the Week:


Freshman Ryan Montgomery earned UChicago's first football UAA Athlete of the Week last Monday after a dominating performance in a setback at Washington-St. Louis Sept. 9.

Maroon Football had a chance to recharge with last week's Bye Week, as UChicago prepares for a road contest at Illinois College Sept. 23.

Defensive lineman Jackson Ross (51) has nine solo tackles and eight assisted, 1.5 tackles for loss and a half sack for the Maroons this season. Teammate Peter Casey (pictured left, 99) adds 10 solo tackles and seven assisted, including SEVEN tackles for loss and two sacks.
Defensive back Bill Rotnicki (26) is second on the Maroons' defense with 15 solo tackles, including three assisted and adds an interception.


Khia Kurtenbach swept the first two weeks of UAA Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors after another Top 3 finish Sept. 9.
Both Maroon Cross Country teams had a bye week last week as UChicago preps for its third meet of the year Sept. 22 in Rock Island, Ill.

TOP 10 RANKING: The UChicago Women's Cross Country team matched its second-highest ever ranking at #6 in the Week 1 USTFCCA Division III rankings. Full poll:

  • Races: Women's 6K Blue Race, 4:30 PM Men's 8K Blue Race, 5:15 PM
Khia Kurtenbach was the top overall finisher in the 2016 Brissman Lundeen Blue Race, leading the Maroons to a first-place team finish in the 24-team event.
Cassidy McPherson crossed the line second for UChicago in last year's Brissman-Lundeen race, running a 6K time of 22:56 to place sixth overall.
Then UChicago freshman Tim Koenning is the top returner from last year's Brissman Lundeen 8K for the Maroons. He placed 22nd overall with a time of 26:02 to help the UChicago men's team place third overall in the 21-team event.
Peter Kreuch placed 34th overall for the Maroons in last year's Brissman-Lundeen Blue Race, running an 8K time of 26:20 to place third overall for UChicago.


The Maroon men's and women's tennis teams open the 2017 campaign this week, with the women hosting Augustana Tuesday at the Stagg Tennis Courts and the Maroon men heading to the Western Michigan Invitational Sept. 23.

Sophomore Marjorie Antohi is back for the Maroons this year after capturing the UAA's Rookie of the Year honor. She went 25-4 in singles play at primarily the No. 2 spot. The UChicago women reached the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2017, falling to eventual champion Williams College, 5-3.

Alyssa Rudin is also back for UChicago after earning all-UAA honors as a sophomore. She went 21-3 in singles play and 20-7 in doubles play in 2016-17.

Nicolas Chua returns for the Maroon men's team after becoming the first men's player in program history to ever reach the NCAA singles semifinals in 2016-17.

Then-freshmen Erik Kerrigan (left) and Ninan Kumar also reached the NCAA semifinals in doubles play for the Maroons in 2016-17, helping UChicago advance to the NCAA Round of 16.
