Frankenstein Visual Theme Essay By: john taylor

People are judged based on appearance. In the book Frankenstein my Mark Shelley it shows. The monster created by the scientist is hated and basically kicked from mankind because of his ugly appearance. This makes him hate humans especially his creator.

The monster was ugly. When the scientist or "Creator" of the monster made it even he was so scared by how ugly it was he left. He didn't even get to meet him or have a conversation with the monster he just got up and left because it was so ugly. The scientist Frankenstein couldn't stand the creature he made and he left judged off of appearances. For example in the book, "But now that i had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart. Unable to endure the aspect of the being i had created, i rushed out of the room and continued a long time traversing my bedchamber, unable to compose my mind .to sleep."(Shelley 70)

Later in the book the monster is shot and killed for saving a woman who was drowning. When he was seen by a man with a gun while he was helping the woman the man shot the monster in the leg. He was shot because he looked like he was harming the woman because of his appearance. For example in the book, "On seeing me, he darted towards me, and tearing the girl from my arms, hastened towards the deeper parts of the wood. I followed speedily, I hardly knew why; but when the man saw me draw near, he aimed a gun, which carried, at my body, and fired. I sank to the ground, and my injurer, with increased swiftness, escaped into the wood."(179)

Everyone judged the monster because of his appearance. He was so hideous that people would scream and faint and run away when they seen him. Nobody tried to talk to him and establish a relationship or bond with him. Everyone just seen him as ugly and tried to run away or move from him as fast as possible. For example in the book "Great God....Who are you? At that instant the cottage door was opened, and Felix, Safie, and Agatha entered. Who can describe the horror and consternation on beholding me? Agatha fainted, and Safie, unable to attend to her friend, rushed out of the cottage. Felix darted forward, and with supernatural force tore me from his father, to whose knees i clung; in a transport of fury, he dashed me to the ground and struck me violently with a stick." (170)

Frankenstein was thinking about all the bad things that could happen from him creating a female version of the monster. Some of the main problems was it being scared of the monster because it was ugly or them two getting together and making a new race of ugly monster babies. He didn't even make the female monster to find out. He just thought about how ugly and angry the first one was when Frankenstein made the monster that way and he made a judgement call to not make another one which caused him the death of his wife and father. In the book it says, "She also might turn with disgust from him to the superior beauty of men......yet one of the first results of those sympathies, and a race a devils would be propagated upon the earth who might make the very existence of the species of man a condition precarious and full of terror.(209-210)

Even after Frankenstein died and his friend Walton met the monster, the very first thing he mentioned was that Frankenstein's monster was hideous and hard to look at. Everyone assumed the monster just liked to kill because he was a monster when in reality the monster was just mad at his creator and that no one understood him. All he wanted was for people to not hate him and build a bond with him but no one would because of his appearance. In the book it said, "Never did i behold a vision so horrible as his face, of such loathsome yet appalling hideousness. I shut my eyes involuntarily........ i dared not again raise my eyes to his face, there was something so scaring and unearthly in his ugliness."
