Treat your heart and brain well.
Evidence suggests extra-virgin coconut oil helps prevent heart disease.
This type of oil also has high levels of medium-chained triglycerides (MCTs). Why are MCTs important?
Like a hummingbird, the brain depends on glucose (a sugar) for fuel, but the brain also relies on fatty acids for energy - especially medium-chained fatty acids like those in coconut oil.
Unlike glucose, medium-chained fatty acids do not require insulin. Coconut oil increases the efficiency of insulin, thus strengthening mitochondria, the engines of our brain cells.
Coconut oil is also plentiful in healthy chemicals called flavonoids. (Please refer to my previous blog on flavonoids if you would like more information.)
In coming weeks I will discuss various healthy and unhealthy oils.
