The country

Italy is the country that looks like a boot. It’s located in Europe. It’s got a few neighbouring countries: France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. There are four seas around Italy: The Ligurian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea. The country is divided into 20 provinces. The country’s total area is 301,320 square kilometres. But 50,210 kms are islands. The two biggest islands are Sicily and Sardinia. The people speak Italian, French and German. But the official language is Italian. Italy’s capital is Rome. Italy is a republic, so it has a president. They haven’t got a king or queen. Italy has got lots of mountains and hills. Some of these mountains are volcanoes. The highest mountain area is the Monte Rosa. There are a number of lakes in Italy. The best known are lake Garda, and lake Maggiore. Italy has got 57.5 million inhabitants. The river Tiber runs through Rome. But it isn’t Italy’s biggest river, it’s biggest river is the river Po.

Climate and vacation

It is generally very warm in Italy. When it’s summer it can be like 30 degrees or even warmer. That’s why lots of people go on a vacation here. In winter it can be cold or warm, it can be very different. In the North it is colder. In the Alps there is usually snow, so many people go skiing in winter. In summer it’s always very dry, it hardly ever rains. But in winter it rains more. Italy is a very popular holiday destination. That’s because people like warm places to go to on their holiday in summer. Rome (the capital of Italy) is a nice city to visit. And there are lots of lakes and the sea so you can swim. Also you can find many camping sites with nice pools. In cities or villages you can go shopping. There is often a market in Italy. You can find clothes, electronics, and food there. There aren’t many supermarkets in Italy. Of course you’ve got regular stores too. Stores where you can buy clothes and other stuff. Italy is a nice place to go shopping when you are on vacation.

The people in Italy love sports. Especially football is very popular there. There are some very good clubs in Italy like Juventus, AC Milan or Napoli. These clubs have got really big stadiums. For every match thousands of people come to watch the match. And the people who can’t come to the match are watching it on TV when it is an important game. The clubs are very rich, because of all those many spectators. With all this money they can buy good new players. But not only football is popular in Italy. In winter lots of people go to Italy to ski there. In the Alps there is snow, so it is a good place to go skiing. And in their holidays Italians go hiking, swimming, or mountaineering. Car races and cycling are very popular, too. Italians people are very good people.

The speciality of Italy is food with much herbs. Also pizza is made in Italy. That’s why you always put Italian herbs on a pizza. And pepper is also very popular in Italy. When you going to eat in Italy there’s always some pepper spray on the table. Pasta comes out of Italy too. In Italy are most of the times brick kilns. I like that because it’s really old. Italy is also known by the high chefs hats. When you was a little child you probably made these. When you think of an Italian chef you think most of the time also about a moustache. The terraces are always homy.

Fashion and design

Italian fashion has a long tradition and is regarded as one of the most important in the world. Milan, Florence and Rome are the main fashion capitals of Italy. According to top global fashion capital rankings 2013 by global rankings 2013 by global language monitor, Rome ranked sixth worldwide when Milan was twelfth. Major fashion labels, such as Gucci, Armani, Prada, Versace, Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni, Fendi, Moschino, Max Mara, Trussardi and Ferragamo, to name a few, are regarded as among the finest fashion houses in the world. Also, the fashion magazine Vogue Italia, is considered one of the most prestigious fashion magazines in the world. Italy is also prominent in the field of design, notably interior design, architectural design and urban design. The country has produced some well known furniture designers, such as Gio Ponti and Ettore Sottsass and Italian phrases such as “Bel Disegno”and “Linea Italiana” have entered the vocabulary of furniture design. Examples of classic pieces of Italian white goods and pieces of furniture included Zanussi’s washing machines and fridges, the new tone sofas by Antrium and the post modern bookcase by Ettore Sottsass, inspired by Bob Dylan’s song “Stuck Inside Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again”.

The Italian state runs a universal public healthcare system since 1978. However, healthcare is provided to all citizens and residents by a mixed public-private system. The public part is Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, which is organised under the ministry of health and spending in Italy accounted for 9,2% of the national GDP in 2012, very close the OECD countries’ average of 9,3%. Italy is in 2000 ranked as having world’s 2nd best healthcare system, and world’s 2nd best healthcare performance. Life expectancy in Italy is 80 for males and 85 for females, placing the country 6th in the world for life expectancy. In comparison to other Western countries, Italy has a relatively low rate of adult obesity (below 10%), probably thanks to the health benefits of the mediterranean diet.
