Thesis: In The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho , A boy named Santiago shows passion , love , brokenness through his journey of personal legend to achieve his goal to make his heart full for which we can observe his choices along the way.
Commentary: As in both The Alchemist and the movie UP both characters Carl and Santiago make their life goals at first , but soon they lose the important part which is love which makes the change for adventure and creates new decisions along the way which can be observed in different ways of thought. Each decision Carl makes is because of Ellie and her personal legend to go to Paradise Falls and Santiago loves Fatima (the merchants daughter) which can also take away from Santiago finding the pyramids and the treasure but that one moment makes everything different through his eyes. Love begins Carl's journey but Santiago's only forgets love for his journey.
Detail #2:"Because you are trying to realize your Personal Legend. And you are at the point where you're about to give it all up."(Coelho 25) Quoted by The Old Man. The quote show the true meaning for love in Santiagos case but what love is loving the need to find the pyramids and treasure.
Commentary: In The Alchemist by Paulo Coello and in the bible The Exodus. Both Moses and Santiago go on journeys because of a passion for life the their passion turns into decisions that shape their journey for passion. Moses passion is to Sinai for the people which gives him that passion to free the people and Santiago's passion to find the pyramids gives him a passion to get their because of the stories told and both do it for themselves and others to because a passion can go a long way.
Detail #3: "Then the Lord said, 'I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the country of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them. So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.' (NRSV 3:7-10)
Detail#4: "Because there is a force that wants you to realize your Personal Legend; it whets your appetite with a taste of success"(Coelho 31) quoted by The Old Man. This shows how a taste of success makes Santiago's passion even more wanting like wise Moses.
Commentary: In many ways The Alchemist can be compared to Romeo and Juliet because both make decisions and end in brokenness but not always. In Romeo and Juliet both are drown to suicide for love which leaves the family in a heart break of brokenness which is caused by the decisions make in which we observe.
Detail #5: JULIET: "Go, get thee hence, for I will not away. What's here? a cup, closed in my true love's hand?Poison, I see, hath been his timeless end:O churl! drunk all, and left no friendly drop .To help me after? I will kiss thy lips;Haply some poison yet doth hang on them,To make die with a restorative.Thy lips are warm" quoted by Juliet. This shows love is what turns to brokenness in death they may parish.
Detail#6: "Treasure is uncovered by the force of flowing water, and it is buried by the same currents,"(Coelho 27)quoted by The Old Man. The symbolizes that Santiago's brokenness of not getting Fatima can drive his ways finding what we wants in truth because of his brokenness.
Conclusion: In conclusion you can find when you closely observe the words and decisions each character makes it can lead to different things and in The Alchemist and the movie Up and Romeo and Juliet and The Bible the decisions may lead to passion for something or someone or love even brokenness.
