Personal Legends and their many elements

Thesis: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, demonstrates how different factors affect one's journey, by using teachers, demoralizing situations and making decisions based upon your heart.

Alchemist: "'There is only one way to learn,'" the Alchemist answered. 'It's through action. Everything you need to know you have learned through your journey.'" (Coelho 129).

Commentary: Jesus was a teacher, a mentor, and a role model. He believed that actions spoke louder than words, and that if you believe by faith you will be successful in your journey. Like in The Alchemist, Jesus directs his students in the correct way but does not lead them straight towards their goal.

Example: “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” (Matthew 4:19).

Alchemist: "He was no longer a shepherd, and he had nothing, not even the money to return and start everything over." (Coelho 41).

Commentary: In The Hunger Games film written by Suzanne Collins, Katniss is put in the worst situation anyone could imagine. She has to sacrifice her freedom for her sister. In doing this she believed she was going to die inevitably. Both Katniss and Santiago were demoralized by these situations, but used these situations to get through and realize their personal legends.

Alchemist: "'Wherever your heart is, that is where you’ll find your treasure.'" (Coelho 128).

Commentary: Santiago is told this by the alchemist, and he uses this to fuel the rest of his journey. He will make better decisions if he listens to his heart, whereas if he were to over think and make decisions using his head he wouldn't find his treasure. Just like in The Alchemist , in Stefan Kary's "HEART OVER MIND" he explains how the mind can overtake the heart which can lead you away from your personal legend.

Example: "Over your body your mind takes control/But only your heart can make plans for the soul..." (Kary 5-6).

Conclusion: Personal legends are affected by numerous factors such as mentors, sticky situations, and the place of your heart. All in all, if you stay focused, listen to your heart, and keep moving forward you can achieve anything. Just as Paulo Coelho wrote, "'People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.'" (Coelho 25).
