Birkett Race Report - Joshua Barrett
The 2017 Grove & Dean Holly Birkett 6 Hour Relay was the 67th running of the event with a capacity 70-team entry and 317 drivers taking part, making it a very busy race track – with a wide variety of cars. The Handicap victory went to the RAF MSA by 57 seconds. Chris Slator (Peugeot 306), Darren Howe (VW Golf), Scott Lawson (BMW Compact), Ed McKean (BMW 325i) and Dan Smith (Ford Fiesta) were the drivers. Production GTi Gentleman and Team Osman completed the podium. Once again it was a Radical team that came out on top on Scratch with a team of SR3 RSX’s with Brian Harvey, John MacLeod and Thomas Harvey taking driving duties. They won by two laps over two teams of Radicals run by James Breakell. The event featured a special guest team from BBC Top Gear. Chris Harris, Matt Le Blanc and Rory Reid all took part – in a very difference quartet of cars. A Mercedes 600 SEL, Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, Bentley Turbo-R and Dacia Sandero. The TV programme is expected to air in the Spring.
December Driver of the month - Stefano Leaney
Chosen and written by Joshua Barrett
Stefano Leaney moved into car racing for the first time in 2017 and claimed the Bikesports title with his Radical PR6. He went into the 67th running of the Birkett Relay on the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit as his Endurance racing debut with his PR6. He starred throughout the event – he started in third place for the ‘Breakell Racing Heroes’ team but had taken the lead by half way around the opening lap. Despite a spin, his impressive opening stint gave the team over half a minute advantage. He ran 41 laps during the event and set the quickest lap time of the event by over a second in a race which featured 317 drivers, in 70 teams on a very busy circuit. Leaney’s performance helped the team take second overall on Scratch. Leaney went on to compete in three Britcar Endurance races – at Oulton Park, Silverstone and Brands Hatch. There he raced a Radical RXC alongside Rob Wheldon, where he won the two-hour encounter in impressive fashion at Brands. A fantastic month of racing for Leaney in a very impressive first season
