WEEKLY NUTRITION and FITNESS TIPS

BASD Health Matters Monthly #1

The Bethlehem Area School District prides itself on its health services department and the staff that supports it. Each month, we will give you some quick tips from our knowledgeable employees and partners.

.

Healthy Tips from Michelle Martucci, RD, LDN

Dietitian for Bethlehem Area School District

The ABC Tips - P:

• Potatoes: Potatoes have been scrutinized for being unhealthy and categorized with white rice and white pasta due to it containing a high amount of carbohydrates. However, potatoes contain a lot more nutrients than white rice and pasta. Potatoes contains antioxidants, have no fat, is low in sodium, and high in potassium. Potatoes are also a good source of fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, folate, beta carotene, and iron. Try topping your baked potatoes off with other superfoods such as beans, spinach, or even a fried egg.

Pumpkin contains beta-carotene that is converted to vitamin A when digested in the body. The beta-carotene is known to help boost your immune system, prevent coronary artery disease, and is important for maintaining good eye health. Either using fresh or canned pumpkin is beneficial to your health. Pumpkin seeds have as many nutrition benefits as the flesh of the pumpkin. The seeds are packed with protein, magnesium, potassium, and zinc. Try making pumpkin soup and add roasted pumpkin seeds as a topping.

2019 Cops ’n’ Kids 13th Annual

Celebration of Reading . . . and the Arts and Sciences

April 27, 2019 — 11 am until 3 pm

We have started planning for our 13th annual Cops ’n’ Kids Celebration of Reading . . . and the Arts and Sciences, and we have a great deal to celebrate!

With the help of our entire community, the award-winning Cops ‘n’ Kids Children’s Literacy Program has reached a remarkable milestone, distributing more than 940,000 free books thus far.

This will be our "March to the Millionth" event!

To celebrate this accomplishment, and the children of our community, we invite you to join us (rain or shine) for a day of food, fun, family, crafts, entertainment, laughter—and, of course, literacy.

If you are interested in having your students perform, please contact Tammy Giampapa at tgiampapa@basdschools.org for more information.

Please mark your calendars—and thank you for helping us to “connect kids and community through literacy.”
