Measurement Marshmellows

Measure lengths indirectly and by iterating length units. Math Standard - 1.MD.2 --- Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps.

Using marshmellows measure this candy cane. Be ready to construct an argument and explain your thinking.

Candy Cane

Materials needed: large candy canes, one sized marshmellows.

Exploration Time - 5-10 minutes ---take pictures for conversation. Discussion- 10-15 minutes. Guiding questions for discussion: How many marshmellows did you use? Did anyone get a different number? Why do you think we have different numbers? Did anyone get the same? How do we make an accurate number? Would 50 be accurate? Can anyone construct an argument about their number? Have students show how they measured? Discuss the gaps, overlaps.

Chant: To find the length of your desk or your friend, Use the same unit from end-to-end! Measurement will be a snap if you never gap or overlap!

Now measure how tall this tree is with the marshmellows. Explain your thinking. Color the picture.
