LEAP - Information for Mentors and Assessors

The Leadership in Education Awards Programme (LEAP) supports applicants in documenting and evidencing their teaching excellence, and is an opportunity for them to receive a formal, national qualification for your teaching. The programme is accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and can award Associate, Fellowship, Senior and Principal HEA Fellowships.

LEAP Mentors

The role of the mentor is to read and comment on one draft application per mentee. They are usually given a group of 4-5 people, who will also be working as a peer support group. The feedback should help them to complete their application. In terms of time commitment, LEAP mentors agree to read and comment on up to 6 applications and provide advice and guidance to your LEAP mentor group. Busy times will occur close to the submission deadlines. Training is offered to support and develop mentors in their role and runs twice per academic year.

To be a LEAP mentor you must:

 Hold a HEA fellowship at the appropriate pathway i.e. Principal fellowship - must hold Principal fellowship; Senior Fellowship – must hold either Senior or Principal fellowship; Fellowship –must be at least a Fellow of the HEA; Associate Fellow - must be at least an Associate Fellow of the HEA.

 Be familiar with the UKSPF.

 Have read the LEAP handbook and assessors guide.

LEAP Assessors

As a LEAP assessor you will be asked to mark applications using the marking proforma, which can be found in Appendix 2 of the LEAP Handbook. An electronic copy of the completed form will be submitted to the Lead Assessor. Lead Assessors will collate the information onto the final recommendation form and present the result at the LEAP Recognition Panel. Busy times will occur close to the submission deadlines. Training will be offered at the request of the Assessor.
