Welcome to the Fall 2020 Newsletter! As we continue to navigate through this challenging time, the safety of our customers, staff and community is our top priority. We will continue to follow the guidelines from the City of San Antonio, State of Texas and the CDC. We encourage everyone to wear a mask, practice social distancing, be mindful of all the surfaces you come in contact with, and frequently wash your hands. Should you begin to have any sign of COVID-19 symptoms, we highly encourage you to call the Pro Shop to cancel your tee time. Thank you to our customers for your patience and continued support.
ON THE GREEN WITH BRUCE
As of this writing, we have not had any significant rainfall since May 27. However, the course is green and playability is great.
We completed the last greens aerification of the year in mid-August. We did a hollow core tine ¾” X 10” deep and then a light topdressing. The week prior to that, we fertilized greens with a custom blend specifically formulated for the greens at The Quarry. That application really helped speed the recovery and allow the holes to knit over. It’s important to aerifiy the greens to help alleviate compaction, remove organic matter, and create a nice vent for gas exchange and water infiltration. The next hollow core aerification will occur in April of 2021.
On October 12, we will overseed the greens with Poa trivialis. This is a cool season grass that is very fine textured and maintains its color even after freezes. During the germination process, which lasts about 8-10 days, the golf course maintenance staff will lightly water the seed with our overhead sprinklers for a few minutes every hour. In order for the seed to germinate it must be kept moist so that the seed can imbibe the water, swell up and sprout. After the new plant has established itself thoroughly, we will begin mowing greens. For the most part, players will not even notice that we overseeded and ball roll shouldn’t be impeded during germination.
Thank you to all who have supported us through this summer and beyond. The golf course maintenance staff takes great pride in providing you with the best possible playing conditions.

QUARRY FUN FACTS
LOUIS THE HAWK
Louis is a red-tailed hawk which is the most common hawk in North America.
His family's nest sits along the cliff on hole 13 where they have a sweeping view of the back nine.
The cry of a red tail hawk is a raspy scream which is often used for all bird sounds in Hollywood movies. They will cry while on the hunt and protect their next. You can spot Louis in the early morning hours at first light or as the sun is setting.
