Jenna Westaway A sportrait by Arthur images

Jenna Westaway, born and raised in Calgary Alberta currently has 20/20 vision and by that I'm not referring to her eye sight but the fact that she has her eyes set on the year 2020.

With the Tokyo Summer Olympics less than 3 years away Jenna is looking to not only make the Canadian team but run a sub 2 minute 800m with her best currently standing at 2:01.97. I had the fortune to meet up with her in Calagary just recently to capture a sportrait of her before she left for the World University Games.

If I gave you a one-way ticket where would you go?

I'd probably jet to The Big Island of Hawai'i. I'd drink Kona coffee, see the black sands of Punaluu Beach, and visit Mauna Loa. I don't know if I'd come back; I love heat and humidity, but I'd really miss my people. If we're still talking hypothetically, however, I'd fly them out there to be with me.

Do you like rainy days or snowy winter days?

I feel 110% tougher while running through the rain, and 80% less motivated when running through the snow. The numbers speak for themselves.

What did you study in University?

I graduated from the University of Calgary, BSc Geology. I love the outdoors, and I think the study of geology helped me to become a well-rounded scientist; To be a good geoscientist, one must have both an appreciation for the many facets of science (astronomy, physics, biology, chemistry) and an understanding of their dimensions not only in 3D, but with the factor of time. I see the world a little differently now; I appreciate nature's patterns, and feel pretty lucky to live on Planet Earth!

What would you tell your younger self?

Keep being bold & unapologetically you, Jen, and things will work out.

What's your favourite restaurant?

The Coup and Meet, on 17th Ave in Calgary. It's a hip vegetarian spot with a great vibe and menu. I was skeptical at my first visit, as I'm not a vegetarian, but now I'm a regular!

"""You miss 100% of the shots you don't take"- Wayne Gretzky"-Michael Scott"-Jenna Westaway

Who do you look up to for inspiration?

Honestly, I'm inspired by each and every person I meet. Everyone has a beautiful story, and each one is worth the listen. With that said, I admire Terry Fox's courage and compassion.
"I have become more accepting of my dark sides and vulnerabilities (everybody has a bit of crazy!), and more trusting of my courage, ferocity, and resilience."

Yeah, pineapples can be on pizza. You say, "Why?", I say, "Why not?". You do you, and I'll do me. This mentality can be applied to many situations. It's all about respect.

Jenna is one of the girls to beat on the track if you want to be a contender in the 800m
Jenna finishing just behind Melissa Bishop, the Canadian record holder in the 800m.

So what's your story?

I'm a Calgary girl, born and raised. Growing up, I played many sports, but it was the speed at which I could do them that mattered most to me (I just wanna go fast!).

I raced my first 800m at the age of 9, and didn't even finish it; I was in so much pain at the 600m mark, I was sure something was wrong. There was nothing wrong. That's just running for ya. My goal was to finish the race, so I signed up for another the following weekend. When I met that goal, I began to work towards improving my time. Since I started working on this, I've taken a whole 57sec off my 800!

I've had some beautiful moments in the sport, and I am the woman I am today thanks, in large, to the sporting community. Sport has funded my education, allowed me to experience various cultures, and introduced me to many of my closest friends. Sport has also allowed me to become better-acquainted with myself. I have become more accepting of my dark sides and vulnerabilities (everybody has a bit of crazy!), and more trusting of my courage, ferocity, and resilience.

As I've worked to shed 57sec off my initial Personal Best, I've established an unrelenting belief in myself. With that, who's to say by how much more I can improve? At the end of my athletic career, I will be satisfied knowing that I conducted myself as authentically as possible, and that by chasing my aspirations wholeheartedly and unapologetically, I gave others permission to do the same.
