Dunellen's Drama Club

The Drama club at Dunellen High School is a school organization, headed by Mr. Spector, where students go to express their feelings, and a gateway for students to convey their talents. It helps students develop skills that come into play later in life. Their fundraisers allow students to gain community service hours and the shows’ history leaves a lasting impression on everyone who takes part, whether as an actor or crew member.

To the average student, the Drama Club may seem to be little more than a group of students who perform shows and hold bake sales every once in awhile, but that is only a small portion of who they are. The DHS Drama Club is a non-funded, after-school program that presents two shows a school year: a Fall play and a Spring musical.

Up until this school year, the advisor and director of the Drama club was Ms. Houston, now known as Mrs. West. At the start of this year, students were greeted with the new face of the Drama Club, Mr. Spector. Under new management, the Drama club has already successfully presented one production this school year: The Bully Plays.

The Drama Club is most notable for the productions it stages every Fall and Spring. The process for these shows starts several months beforehand, when the upcoming production is revealed to those interested. Following this, typically in early September for the play and December for the musical, tryout pieces are given to the students. A week later, the students try out. For those chosen to be in the show, a full cast read-through is done of the script, then soon after rehearsals begin. Ms. Piano, the choir director, contributes during the Spring musicals by teaching the students their music.

The school board does not provide funding to the Drama club, so its members hold year-round fundraisers to raise money and gain support. The most famous fundraiser is the scoop dinner, which brings in most of the money that the Drama Club uses.

According to many of its members, the Drama Club is a family. Senior Celeste Piano, an actress, stated in an interview, “Drama gives you more of a bonding feeling that I believe you don’t find in other activities. You are with these people from early morning till late at night.” Olivia Posluszny, a Freshman actress, is among the club’s newest members. She commented on her experience in her first production: “One of the best things was getting to know people, and making new friends.” These are two of many explanations of why students enjoy the Drama Club.

The club has an abundance of traditions that have been passed down through the years. There are the famous warm-ups, and the charm given out after ever show is completed. These small elements make a big difference to those involved, and give character to the club.

These are just some of the many reasons why students partake in the Drama Club. For some, it is a the chance to improve, and to others, a place to go to feel like part of a family.
