It was a complete surprise on Monday night, when the Prime Minister announced that schools were going to only be open for a small number of children again, and for everyone else to be learning online at home! I'm sure you'll agree that Greenfields Primary School and Nursery has done an amazingly swift about-turn, and by lunchtime on Wednesday, everyone had settled into remote learning either in school, or at home - there's some lovely examples later on in the Newsletter.
Of course, because it was such a surprise, we didn't have a chance to offer you learning packs (for younger children), books and other materials that you might need to support your child's learning at home. Please let us know if you would like exercise books or (almost) anything else to support your child at home. Please also have a look at the messages sent this week as the office have sent details of a Government scheme to receive data top-ups to support online learning.

Google Classroom Access via games consoles
If you have more than one child at home and you're juggling the live lessons between devices, did you know that if you also have an X-Box or Playstation linked to the internet, you can use them to access Google Classroom - at least to watch the live lessons? Both consoles have an internet browser (PS4 is easier than PS5, but XBox is Microsoft Edge) and all you need to do is type in classroom.google.com and add your log-in details when asked using your controller. You will be let straight into your classroom. You can follow links to live lessons from there. If you have a plug in keyboard for your console (some people do), you can even complete your work via your console (this might be easier than typing with your controller) For full instructions (click below).
This week Year Four/Five kicked off their new Talk 4 Writing unit by preparing for survival in an extreme environment. I absolutely loved seeing the children in their survival gear and think Bear Grylls would be proud.
Children planned to venture to places including outer space, the Outback and The Arctic.
Take a look at some of the children and Miss Kenny about to embark on their adventure.
Year 2 in the Stone Age
Year 2 are learning about the Stone Age this term so as part of WOW Day they found natural materials to make different coloured paints. They then painted pictures using their new paints to show what they did during the holidays. Can you guess what Year 2 did over the holidays?
Year 2 WoW Day
Year 2 completed some incredible Science work on Tuesday! They didn’t let the surprise of home learning get in their way! They examined their own teeth using mirrors and then drew diagrams and included the specific names of the teeth! Well done super scientists!
Reception group: School
In Reception, the children had a great time learning about dinosaurs. Today they made their own playdough and then used it to make dinosaur footprints. The children measured out the ingredients and worked together to mix and then knead the dough . Super team work class! For those children not in school, keep a look out for the recipe to make your own playdough at home on Tapestry.
Sizes and shapes in Reception
Reception have been impressing us all with their hard work at home this week! They have been ordering objects by length and using the correct mathematical language. They have also been using the phonics videos and the handwriting rhymes to practise their handwriting! Keep it up everyone!
Nursery get online
It has been great to see so many of the Nursery children engaging in some fantastic learning this week both at home and in the bubble at school. Keep up the hard work!!
Don't forget to join us daily at 2.30pm for our live story time, the link can be found on Tapestry.
Yr1/2 School Group Working Hard
The children in school this week have been very busy completing their work! They loved using the school laptops and getting creative in CKC lessons! They were thrilled to join in with their class' live teams meeting and listen to a story from their teacher.
September 2021 Reception Intake
If you have a child turning 4 years old between 1 September 2020 and 31 August 2021, you need to apply for their place to start in Reception in September 2021.
Greenfields Primary School and Nursery is now rated as ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted, and as with all outstanding schools the popularity of the school increases. With this in mind, we are expecting to be oversubscribed in our admissions for a place in our Reception class in September 2021. This means that we will not have enough places for the number of children applying and some families will be disappointed and not be allocated Greenfields. More information on admissions can be found on our website
The application process is now available on the Northamptonshire County Council website: click on the button below to apply for place at Greenfields. The closing date is Thursday 17:00hrs 15th January 2021.
If your child is currently attending our nursery and is due to start in our Reception next year, then we do not want you to be disappointed and miss out on a place. You must submit an application before the closing date as places are NOT automatically allocated.
Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact our school office.
Google Classroom is where you will find Greenfields' amazing virtual classrooms full of chat and lots of hard work! If you have not used Google Classroom before, or you are new to Greenfields, please follow this link that explains how to log on to a PC, Android or Apple device. You will need your child’s email address and password, and the class codes below:
Class Code and Google Link
Teachers are looking forward to posting their ‘Flipping Greenfields’ videos this Friday in time for the weekend. Each one is all about next week’s learning, so will get your child prepared for a flying start on Monday. Research shows that children who feel prepared for the coming week are less anxious about school, happier to get up and go on a Monday morning and achieve better than those who are not.
