Nonconformity

“If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.”

-Walden, Henry David Thoreau

This is shown by Miley Cyrus with the way she dresses, acts, and how she makes her music videos like in the wrecking ball music video back in August 25, 2013 doing something that no one has ever seen.

In the video she is swinging around naked on a wrecking ball. While this is happening she is singing about a guy she broke up with. This is very different from when she was a Disney star.

Self- Reliance

“ Society everywhere is in conspiracy against the manhood of everyone of it members… Self-reliance is its aversion,” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Taylor Swift has been making music for years. In her music she is talking about how she doesn’t need another man and broke up with him. This shows how she doesn't need the help and that she can rely on her own.

Importance of Nature

“In the woods we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life- no disgrace, no calamity…”

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is shown in Buddhism where they would meditate for long periods of time. This would find enlightenment and having way of life of peace, loving kindness and wisdom. Buddhism is not a new thing but is still being practiced today.

Favoring Intuition over Reason

“That man is rich whose pleasures are the cheapest.” - “Journals 1856,”

-Henry David Thoreau

Steve Jobs is a man who proved people wrong when he was able to finally make the iPod and iPad back in January 27, 2010. These were two things that had looked impossible to make at the time. It is because of his dreams that we have such great technology. Because of this we are all very great full for these devices.

Simplified Life

“Our life is frittered away by detail. An honest man has hardly need to count more than his ten fingers, or in extreme cases he may add his ten toes, and lump the rest. Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity.”

- Walden, Henry David Thoreau

Austin Hay is someone who lives a simple life. He created his own small mobile house to live in so he doesn’t have to pay mortgage. This started back in 2010. The project had cost him about 12,000 to make for all the materials.

It all started when Hay’s high school gave students an assignment to research any topic that piqued their interest. He chose the tiny house movement. The project really took off when he parked a small trailer in his parents’ backyard.
