Yuba Water Agency's accounting supervisor, Jack Winship, helps keep financial operations running smoothly by ensuring the finance team is properly budgeting for incoming and outgoing grants and staying up-to-date on the latest California Public Employees' Retirement System regulations, while also handling payroll for the entire agency.

What do you do for Yuba Water Agency?

I ensure that all the money going in and out of Yuba Water is going into the right buckets. With the recent retirement of Associate Accountant Lori Iaconis, my day to day is never the same. Some days I will be fielding questions regarding payroll and/or studying up on CalPERS rules and regulations, and the next I am building budget reports for our project managers or tracking incoming/outgoing grants. My most recent objective is to really dive in and clean up our payroll process and make it as efficient and easy as possible, in order to cross train the finance department.

Have your essential duties changed since COVID-19? If so, what has changed?

Not much has changed for me, I continue to come into the office daily.

What do you enjoy most about working for Yuba Water Agency?

Having grown up in this area, I really love being able to be part of the change we are making in this great community.

Before working here, what was the most interesting job you had?

Land surveying was probably the most interesting job I have done. I never knew how intense and tiring it could be to get so many boundary points. The days consisted of jumping over fences, fighting back bushes, entering neighboring properties and getting yelled at by people driving by.

Tell us an unusual story or experience you’ve had while working for Yuba Water Agency.

When I first started, I had a coworker constantly call me “Jake” for about two months. For those two months, I thought I was working for State Farm, but then I quickly realized I didn’t own a pair of Khakis. (If you don't get this, search State Farm TV commercials.)

What’s the most recent app you downloaded on your phone?

NFL Sunday Ticket. Let’s go Niners!

What do you like to do in your free time?

I am a huge fan of golf, whether it be playing or watching. I love doing anything outdoors; hunting, fishing, hiking and camping. I also love spending time with my fiancé and my nieces and nephew.

Winship enjoys an afternoon with his niece, a morning of duck hunting and day of fishing.
