All Sports Awards for the 2019-2020 Academic Year

Due to the unprecedented COVID-19 circumstances, Fork Union Military Academy's Department of Athletics would like to virtually honor outstanding student-athletes throughout the 19 athletic programs.

A Message of the Athletic Director

Cross Country, Track & Field

Cross Country continued its impressive success this year, placing third at the Prep League Championships and seventh at the VISAA State Championships. The Blue Devils earned two All-Prep selections and one All-State honoree.

Indoor track and field also recorded an impressive season, placing fourth at both the Prep League and VISAA State Championships. The Blue Devils earned one All-Prep selection and four All-State selections.

Below, Coach Winston Brown will announce the award winners for cross country and track and field.

Junior Prep Football

Junior Prep football had a growing season this year under the direction of first-year coach Chip Chace.

Prep Football

The Prep football team made a statement in head coach Mark Shuman's first year. The Blue Devils posted a 5-5 record, including their first appearance to the VISAA State Playoffs since 2012. Fork Union recorded seven All-Prep selections and 10 All-State honorees.

PG Football

It was also coach Frank Arritt's first year as head coach of the postgraduate football team. The squad posted a 6-3 overall record, including a 5-2 road swing. The Blue Devils averaged over 35 points a game.

Junior Prep Soccer

Head Coach David Mitchell entered his third year with the Junior Prep soccer team. With assistance from coach Kate Goad, the Blue Devils posted a competitive season this year.

Prep Soccer

Prep soccer had a growing year under the direction of first-year head coach Bob Burger. With just one senior, the Blue Devils hope to return most of their starters next season.

Middle School Basketball

Middle School basketball, also known as Reds basketball, recorded an impressive season under the direction of first-year coach Mark Boyd. The squad posted an overall record of 9-2, including a seven-game win streak to start the year.

Junior Prep Basketball

Junior Prep basketball recorded a great season under the direction of first-year coach Carter Hammond. An alumnus, Hammond volunteered his coaching hours this season and we appreciate all the effort he put into the year. The Blue Devils posted a 6-8 record with quality wins over Tandem School, Christchurch and Saint Anne's Belfied.

Prep Basketball

Prep basketball featured another first-year head coach under the direction of Ben D'Alessandro. The Blue Devils posted an overall record of 9-15, which marks the most wins since 2015. Fork Union also picked up three Prep League wins, including Collegiate and sweeping Woodberry Forest. Sophomore Maurice D'Alessandro earned All-Prep League honors.

PG Basketball

PG basketball recorded another impressive season under the direction of veteran head coach Matt Donohue. The Blue Devils posted an overall record of 22-10, the most wins since the 2016-17 season. Fork Union finished the season ranked No. 13 in the nation with quality wins over Hargrave Military Academy, Massanutten Military Academy and Springfield Commonwealth Academy.

Swimming & Diving

Coach Jon Larson entered his second season as head coach of Fork Union Military Academy's swimming and diving program. The Blue Devils recorded a great year this season, finishing seventh at the Prep League Championships.

Wrestling

The Fork Union Military Academy wrestling program continues to grow tremendously under the direction of head coach Dean Hall. In his fourth year, Hall earned his fourth coach of the year honor, being named the 2019-20 All Central Virginia Coach of the Year. The Blue Devils were named runner-up at the Prep League Championships, placed third overall at the VISAA State Championships and recorded six national qualifiers.

Junior Prep Baseball

Unfortunately, the Junior Prep baseball season did not begin this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Below, head coach Mike Hooper will present the team award.

Prep Baseball

Prep baseball was arguably on track to have one of its best years yet under the direction of third-year head coach Roger Bowles. The Blue Devils were able to play three games this season, posting a 2-1 record thanks to sweeping Fishburne Military School.

Tennis

Tennis was on of four spring sports who were unable to begin the 2020 season. Below, first-year head coach Cameron Noon will present the award winner for tennis.

Junior Prep & Prep Lacrosse

Prep lacrosse began the 2020 season with an impressive, come-from-behind win over county-rival Fluvanna, but unfortunately that was the only game the lacrosse program was able to compete in.

Golf

Golf was another sport that was unfortunately halted by COVID-19. Below, second-year head coach AJ Peterpaul presents the awards for the golf program.

Iron Cadets

Director of Sport Performance Jeff Appel trains student-athletes every afternoon throughout the school year. For the second-straight year, Appel honors the top student-athletes who have shown the most growth in the weight room.
