Camino Mozárabe – Malaga to Córdoba - the new pilgrimage for changing times

Bespoke Spain-specialist travel consultancy TOMA & COE is offering a new take on the Camino de Santiago, St James’ Way. The Camino Mozarabe is an eight-night, seven-day walking route from Malaga to Cordoba, offering stunning mountain scenery in undiscovered parts of Andalucia, as well as fascinating history and culture, and of course superb Andalucian food.

Camino Mozarabe Symbol

Instead of walking to Santiago de Compostela from southern France or northern Spain, the traditional routes, this eight-night, seven-day 100km-route traces the ancient path taken from Malaga to Córdoba by the Mozarabes - Christians who lived under Islamic rule in Al-Andalus, an era which lasted for nearly 800 years.

The Route

Walkers will be delighted by this eight-night, seven-day scenic route which takes in spectacular and varied landscapes, starting in the cultural hub of Malaga, the coastal city which has reinvented itself as much more than the Costa del Sol’s capital. The route takes you past vineyards, oak forests, olive and almond groves, over mountains and through verdant valleys, following mule tracks and footpaths, into deepest rural Andalucia.

The hiking ranges from easy to challenging, but above all, on quiet roads: you will be unlikely to meet other walkers on these little-trod paths. An extraordinary opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of southern Spain in spring, when warm days, with trees and flowers in full bloom, offer perfect hiking conditions.

The Accommodation

Accommodation, over eight nights, is in simple farmhouses in small provincial towns and villages, with delicious Andalucian meals using fresh local produce, allowing walkers to rest and refuel in comfort before the next day’s stage. In the two cities, guests stay in stylish boutique hotels.

The History

Besides the breathtaking and varied landscapes, the route takes walkers past Roman, Jewish and Mozarabe (Islamic-era Christian) remains, celebrating the cultural richness of Andalucia’s past, and its religious tolerance which saw Jewish, Muslim and Christian inhabitants of the region live together happily until the 15th century.
