October Update

October 2021 FECCA Update

Great Start!

I would like to start out by sending a sincere thank you to all teachers, support staff, parents and especially our students for an amazing first month back to school. We continue make adjustments to our regular day, but everyone has truly come together to ensure a safe start to school. Thank You!

With that being said, I would like to remind everyone to continue doing what you are doing. If you are able, and above 12 years of age, we encourage you to get your two COVID-19 vaccinations as soon as you can. This is to protect you and the community around us. We ask you to continue with daily symptom checks, mask wearing, frequent hand washing and keeping kids home when necessary.

Again, it’s been such a pleasure to have everyone back in the building interacting, learning and having fun. It truly does take a community effort to keep our school and students healthy and safe. Keep up the great work!!

Sincerely, Cory Austen

Mi’Kmaw History Month

Fanning Education Centre and Canso Academy are proudly recognizing and participating in Mi’kmaw History Month. We kicked this off by recognizing Truth and Reconciliation Week and Treaty Day on October 1st by offering 16 workshops for students in grades 5 -8 while our PP - 4 did various activities in their classes. On Wednesday, September 29th we recognized Orange Shirt Day. In doing so we recognize and acknowledge indigenous presence, both past, present and into the future. Our work does not stop here, as our teachers and students will be taking part in various learning activities throughout the month. The FECCA School community are allies and proud to say, “We Are All Treaty People”.

A big part of the Truth and Reconciliation process is learning and reflecting about this dark part of Canadian history. "Canada's Dark Secret" is a documentary film that tells the story of Canada’s residential school system and the indigenous survivors who bear witness to its abuses. The content can be heavy and it's recommended to be viewed with parents/guardians. Through documentaries such as this we can learn and start our truth and reconciliation journey.

Terry Fox Run

Students at Fanning Education Centre/Canso Academy took part in the annual Terry Fox run on Thursday, September 23rd. The FECCA community raised over $500 through donations in support of Cancer Research. We would like to thank you for any support you were able to provide. You can also make an online donation directly to our #TryLikeTerry website (tax receipts provided). Here is the link to the website.
