2019 Coast Guard Men's Tennis Preview

Coast Guard is coming off its fifth straight trip to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) semifinals and the team looks to return to the championship match for the first time since 2011.

The Bears were 8-5 overall last year and finished 4-2 in the NEWMAC for the fourth straight season, losing a heartbreaking 5-4 match to second-seeded Babson in the NEWMAC semifinals.

Senior co-captain Tom Hackett returns as the Bears #1 singles player for the third straight season after going 9-3 last season and 3-0 in the Fall at the #1 spot.
Senior co-captain Jack Phillips (top left), junior Arthur Wicke (top middle), sophomores Kyle Fager (bottom left) and Chris Lansing (top right) along with freshman Lucas Arora (bottom right) round out the Bears top six players.
Hackett and Phillips played #1 doubles after going a perfect 3-0 at the #1 spot in the Fall and 3-0 also in that spot in dual matches last season.
Fager and Lansing (PICTURED) were 6-3 as the #2 doubles team last season and 6-4 in the Fall for the Bears. Wicke and Arora were a perfect 3-0 in duals and 8-2 overall in the Fall portion of the season as the #3 doubles team.
During the fall season, the top six players played both doubles and singles for the Bears in all three dual matches. “For the most part, our top 6 players can beat each-other on any given day and that creates a great atmosphere at practice." said HEAD COACH JORDON SMITH, iN HIS SECOND SEASON.
"Sophomore Ryan Casey (PICTURED) and freshman Jacob Schellman are working hard on a daily basis to try to bridge the gap and compete for starting spots as well," ADDED SMITH.
The Bears have just eight players to start the season, but Smith SEES that as an opportunity to work one-on-one more with each player on a weekly basis. “I have the chance to work with each guy for 90 minutes alone on top of our regular practice schedule and with our court situation, all eight guys are playing constantly during practice and nobody has to wait their turn, so we continue to get better each and every day,” said Smith.
The Bears will be tested early battling regional power NYU and national power Clarmont Mudd Scripps in the first two matches of the season, one of the top teams in the nation.
“We are a big hitting team, a big serving team,” said Smith. “If we are playing well, we can compete with these teams, and these matches will certainly get us ready for conference play which begins in April.”
