COLORADO ELEMENTARY

As part of Fire Prevention Week, elementary students were encouraged to color an escape route plan to then be put into a lottery drawing to have lunch with a firefighter! Below are pictures of the winning students with some of the finest at MFD!

Students are preparing for tonight's Fall Festival by making cotton candy to sell to earn money for Colorado's PTO!

FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY

Ms. Harder's kindergarten class had the Muscatine Fire Department come visit them at Franklin! Students learned about jobs in the community and fire safety!

Kindergarteners in Ms. Clemens' class learned all about different jobs in the community this week. They read books about firefighters, fire safety, and even had some special visitors from the fire department come and talk to them. After reading and learning about what it takes to be a chef and work at a pizza place, students got to make their very own pizza for lunch today!

GRANT ELEMENTARY

Grant Leadership Lab was full of fun this week! Students learned bird calls, built catapults, visited with local fire and police officers, and participated in food relays!!

Miss Dindinger's Begindergarten class at Grant School is studying pumpkins! They have found out if pumpkins sink or float, painted pumpkins, and visited the Red Barn Pumpkin Farm!

4th grade students in Ms. Wolf's class at Grant have been learning about meal worm larva/darkling beetles. Here they are proudly displaying their beetles!

Grant held a Tailgate Party last Friday. The event was moved inside but students, families, and staff didn't let the rain ruin their good time! They had hotdogs and chips, danced to some tunes, and held some Bags tournaments in the hallway!

JEFFERSON ELEMENTARY

Third graders in Mr. Loos' class took a field trip to Black Hawk State Park on Wednesday.

This week Journey's targeted Cause and Effect. Jefferson students with a hearing loss in Ms. Story's class got a multi-sensory lesson when adding water to potato flakes. The effect was we had mashed potatoes caused by adding water to the potato flakes. They had a chance to feel the difference before and after, and taste if they wanted.

MADISON ELEMENTARY

At Madison, instead of playing on the soaking wet playground, Kindergarteners in Ms. Bean's class played with bubbles!

The fourth grades at Madison have earned a Dojo Class Reward to read with a snack and read with a flashlight! Great job 4th Graders!

MCKINLEY ELEMENTARY

McKinley's very 1st Running Club (students 1st-5th) get to do extra running activities if they run under an 8 min mile!

MULBERRY ELEMENTARY

Mrs. Haag's 3rd Graders and Mrs. Evans Kindergarten classes explored crayfish.

CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Central Middle School Orchestra had their first concert last night. They played lots of spooky music, and even got to dress up in costume! The winners of the costume contest were Molly Guerra (Pedro) and Abby Stamler (Napoleon Dynamite). Congratulations to all on performing your first concert of the year!

Central students visited Jefferson students this week to talk about their projects for their Robotics class.

At Central Middle School, 115 students in 6th grade gathered for Sign Language Club lead by Ms. Story, teacher of the Deaf and peer, Marissa Lopez. While the room was quietly learning signs it was full of life and excitement by students eager to use their hands to communicate.

The sixth graders at Central spent two days successfully running JA BizTown, a fully-interactive, simulated town. While at BizTown, students operated a bank, managed a cafe and many other businesses, produced a newspaper, and ran a radio station. Students contributed to the town's economy by using their paychecks to purchase goods and services.

The sixth graders at Central spent a day in downtown Muscatine touring the public library, MCSA, police station, First National Bank, Stanley Consultants, and city hall. They also took a ride on the MuscaBus. Students were studying how public and private goods and services impacted a community and the local economy. They also learned about how tax money is used to support our community resources. Students had the privilege of meeting with our mayor to discuss their responsibility as citizens to vote and be involved in the decisions being made in our community.

Visiting musician Grace Kelly instructed students in writing and improvising music at Central Middle School. The students worked with vocal and instrumental music in this hands-on workshop.Thanks to the Quad City Music Guild for sponsoring the event! Miss Kelly also performed for the Central students in an afternoon assembly.

6th grade ag students at CMS got to visit Mr. Youngbauer's potbelly pig Olivia and have been working on researching for creating presentations on animals.

7th grade ag students at CMS use their math skills to weigh chickens to calculate gain and the average weight. Then they put their detective skills to the test exploring different kinds of animal feed. Some of the students didn't think the silage smelled very good!

Mr. Edkin's 7th and 8th grade Robotics classes made pull toys as their first projects and took them to Jefferson Elementary School to share with the elementary students.

The Belin-Blank Center held a Recognition Ceremony on Sunday Oct. 6. The ceremony took place in the University of Iowa’s Iowa Memorial Union. Emilio Bobay was selected and received an award through the Belin-Blank Center. Those accompanying Emilio at the ceremony were Tonio Valenzuela, Becky Wichers, and Lisa McKee (not pictured). Congratulations Emilio!

CENTRAL MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL CHOIRS

The Muscatine High School and Central Middle School choir departments took 16 men to the Real Men Sing Event on October 7th at Wartburg college. The students had a great day of making music and singing with the award winning barbershop chorus Central Standard!

MUSCATINE HIGH SCHOOL

MCC Ag Dept visited with Mr. Day's MHS Ag Classes about opportunities after high school.

Students in Ms. Ruesch's biology classes at the high school worked in groups to complete a Yeast Lab that helped them learn more about cellular respiration.

The 10-12 Academy at MHS spent the day at Discovery Park on Thursday, cleaning and carving a truck-load of pumpkins in preparation for the Halloween Hike. Approximately 40 students and 5 teachers helped make this a very successful service project!

Top Picture: Garrett Auberg, McKenzie Lofgren, and Tory Thompson practice their All-State Choir music with Bob Anderson, a choral clinician and teaching veteran of 34 years, to prepare for auditions coming up on October 21st! Bottom Picture: Jonathan Taverns, Njeri Mungara, and Elizabeth Richardson work with Mr. Anderson on their audition piece. All seven of the groups met with Mr. Anderson for forty minutes to improve their audition. Thanks, Mr. Anderson for your help and expertise!

Boys Cross Country

Coach Foxen gave a shout out to this year's cross country team or being great young men who work hard every day to get better. Congrats Muskie XC!
Trevor Diedrichs placed 2nd team all MAC in the fresh soph division.
Senior Tyler Olson places 5th in the MAC. First-team all-conference. All four years all-conference Runner.
Fresh Soph team are runner up at the MAC XC Meet.
Congrats to Seth Hoffman, Trevor Diedrichs and Matt booth for their Muskie of the meet honors.
