Built by Bethlehem

Built by Bethlehem at Donegan Elementary School

BASD graduates are global leaders in our community. Their accomplishments in public education have kept them in the area and in some cases lead them back to the BASD. We thought it would be interesting to see how many staff members at Donegan have a Bethlehem background. Here is what we found...

Donegan’s Principal Sonia Vazquez grew up in Bethlehem and Principal Vazquez’ father was a Bethlehem Steelworker.

Donegan’s Dean of Students Daniel Garcia graduated from Liberty High School and attended Fountain Hill Elementary School and Broughal Middle School.

Donegan’s ESOL Teacher Lorie Huesz Schwarzbach was born and grew up in South Bethlehem in a bilingual household with her home language being of Slovenian dialect. She attended Donegan Elementary School, Broughal Middle School, and graduated from Freedom High School. She has taught in the BASD for twenty years.

Donegan’s 5th Grade Teacher Angel Rivera arrived in Bethlehem as a fifth grader. He was quickly enrolled at Donegan after bouncing from many schools during his elementary years. He was placed in Mr. Warren Nelson's class. This was the person/teacher who he gives credit for giving him hope, structure, and stability when he needed it the most. He proudly attended Broughal Middle School and graduated from Freedom High School in the Class of 1994. (Special thanks to Mr. Warren.)

Donegan’s Librarian and Gifted Sherry Lutz-Reinhart has been teaching at Donegan Elementary School for 18 years. She attended Hanover Elementary School, East Hills Junior High School, and graduated from Freedom High School.

Donegan’s Kindergarten Teacher Ana Young is a graduate of Liberty High School's Class of 2014. She immigrated to the United States from Panama at the age of five and attended Lincoln, Northeast, and Liberty.

Donegan’s Pre-K Teacher Jessica Rodriguez is a graduate of Freedom High School. She also attended East Hills Middle School and Governor Wolf Elementary School.

Donegan Instructional Assistant Katlyn Snyder is a graduate of Liberty High School Class of 2007. She received a varsity letter in softball all 4 years. She also attended Nitschmann Middle School and Buchanan Elementary School.

Donegan’s Grade 2 Teacher Pamela Kalamar attended Hanover Elementary School, East Hills Middle School and graduated from Freedom High School. She has taught at Donegan for 19 years.

Donegan’s Grade 3 Teacher Samantha Dartouzos is a graduate of Liberty High School Class of 2009. She also attended Northeast Middle School and Spring Garden Elementary School. She loves teaching in the district that raised her.

Donegan’s Reading Specialist Shanna Brad is also a graduate of Liberty High School. She attended Nitschmann MS and Buchanan ES. She notes that she has considered her time spent in the Bethlehem Area School District as a gift. Buchanan gave me a place where she felt she belonged. Nitschmann gave me teachers I knew cared about me and opportunities to flourish as a leader. Liberty taught me how to exist in a place free of social and racial biases. I was truly blessed with these three gifts.

Donegan’s Grade 1 Teacher Aja Olivares started in the BASD in the first year that SPARK classrooms started. She graduated from Freedom in the Class of 2006 and also attended Governor Wolf and East Hills.

Donegan’s Pre-K Program Staff Member Daniel Class is a 2008 graduate of Liberty High School. He also attended Northeast Middle School. He is also a musical director of a local Latin band Herencia Jibara.

Donegan’s Grade 1 Teacher Daria Kret is a Freedom High School graduate who also attended Spring Garden Elementary School and East Hills Middle School.

Donegan’s ESOL Teacher Janice Ford is a 1982 graduate of Freedom High School and also attended Northeast Middle School.

Donegan’s Teacher Assistant Diane Mertz is a Freedom High School graduate who attended Farmersville Elementary School and East Hills Middle School.

We are #BASDproud and Built by Bethlehem.

Healthy Tips from Michelle Martucci, RD, LDN

Dietitian for Bethlehem Area School District

The ABC Tips - Here are some E's:

Edamame: Edamame is a complete protein, which means it contains all nine essential amino acids our body cannot make. One cup of edamame is packed with 18 grams of protein. Edamame also contains antioxidants and isoflavones, and is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, folate, and vitamins B2, C, E, and K. Edamame is known to reduce inflammation and boost your immune system. Avoid edamame if you are allergic to soy. Try adding edamame to stir fry or use it as a topping on your salad.

Eggs are high in two antioxidants known as lutein and zeaxanthin. These two antioxidants protect against the eye diseases: macular degeneration and cataracts. Eggs also contain high quality protein, vitamins, minerals, and good fats. Eggs are considered a complete protein, because they contain all nine essential amino acids that our body cannot make. Out of all foods, eggs are also the best source of choline, which is needed for brain function. Try poached eggs or make an omelet loaded with vegetables.
