Imperialism The fine art of conquering the world

What is imperialism?

the policy, practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisitions or by gaining indirect control over the political or economic life of other areas

What is the main cause of imperialism?

There is usually industrialization in a country before imperialism occurs. This causes imperialism because they require raw materials to refine and workers in their factories. They also required a place to market them. They began looking outside the borders of their country for places where the resources were plentiful as well as cheap.

What are the other causes of imperialism?

Nationalism was also a large part of imperialism, and keeping a balance of power. When a country implements imperialism over another, they become more powerful.

Examples

England - The industrial revolution was most prevalent there and gave them the ability to colonize Africa, India, America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. All of these countries had abundant raw materials and were able to trade to England for refined products. The two main places where they practiced imperialism were India and Africa. India was the British Empire's most valuable colony. It was even called the "Jewel in the Crown", and began with just a small global trading company called the East India Company, which grew to cover most of south Asia. It had many natural, valuable resources, which England used in their industrialization. In Africa, they began looking for slaves after the indigenous people in the Americas began to die off from disease and sickness. They traded for slaves in order to gain more profit in the Americas as well as more resources.

United States - Practiced imperialism in all the states except for the 13 original colonies, Puerto Rico, Philippine Islands. The states were made part of the United States through purchase, war against Spain, and annexation. They also received the Philippine Islands and Puerto Rico from Spain. They received the Philippines from the treaty of Paris, and Puerto Rico as well as other territories from the Spanish-American war.

Imperialism still continues today.
