Navy Point began as the US Navy's primary shipbuilding port on the Great Lakes during the war of 1812
Many of the Great Lakes fighting ships were built and outfitted at Navy Point
After the hostilities ended the was no further need for Great Lakes warships. At Navy Point construction was halted and a Shiphouse was built to protect the unfinished "USS Orleans"

The structure stood until the late 1800's when it was sold at auction as surplus property
Shorty after the turn of the century the land known as "Navy Point" was also sold as surpluss government property giving rise what is now Navy Point Marine.
