Visual Arts National Portrait Gallery

On Tuesday 19th March 2019 Mr Fox Joyce took a group of sixth form Visual Arts students to the National Portait Gallery in central London to see the Martin Parr photography exhibition, Only Human. This was followed by a gallery workshop based on Photographic Portraiture.

‘Only Human’ includes portraits of people from around the world, but particularly his observations of Britishness; a series of projects that investigate British identity today, including new works on the social scene in Britain in the aftermath of the EU referendum.

Our Photographic Portraiture workshop was led by New York based Photopher Giselle. She introduced work by the French Photograher Mayotte Magnus and used aspects of the formal elements to talk about composition and angles in Photography.

We observed heroic portraits and discussed aspects of lighting techniques and again camera angles used to help develop form in a photograph. Furthermore we reflected on old traditional forms of Photography such as photograms, which our students study early in their course to help their understanding of alternative processes and the idea of Photography as Fine Art.

We completed the workshop by discussing a contemporary image of Malala Yousafzai which interestingly fuses ideas of image and text, based on contemporary poetry.
