Towards an Open Defecation Free India Delhi, India

PROJECT OVERVIEW: In urban India, there is a multifaceted challenge of sanitation deprivation and consequent open defecation, particularly the National Capital Territory of Delhi. This project seeks to eradicate open defecation and stop decades of social and physical segregation as well as psychological differentiation brought upon by the Sanitary Revolution in the mid-19th century. A radical change in the current approach is required – ensuring no one is left behind through more equitable and environmentally sustainable interventions and innovations. These will be developed, implemented, monitored, and regulated by the support of government and people at all levels. India needs to audit toilet facilities to identify key reasons for depravity and perpetual open defecation. By October 2, 2023, urban narratives will play a crucial role in realizing this dream of an open defecation free India.
