What a week! Every UChicago fall team in action had great performances as the Maroons continue their fantastic 2017 fall season. Scroll for all the good stuff!

VOLLEYBALL

The UChicago volleyball team cracked the AVCA Division III national rankings for the first time this season last week, then jumped nine spots to #16 with the latest rankings Oct. 3.

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE

The then-ranked #25 UChicago Volleyball Team kicked off last week by celebrating senior Frances McDonald (see above) with a big win over Wheaton, then SWEPT through the first UAA Round Robin, going 3-0 with a huge 3-1 upset over #3 Emory Oct 1.

The Maroons entered this week at #16 with the release of the Oct. 3 AVCA Top 25.

  • Friday, Oct. 6: #16 UChicago vs. Otterbein, 5 PM CT, at Elmhurst Quadrangular.
  • Saturday, Oct. 7: #16 UChicago vs. Elmhurst, 12 PM CT, at Elmhurst Quadrangular.
The #16 UChicago squad swept Wheaton, 3-0, then honored lone senior Frances McDonald after the match in a special Senior Night ceremony.

After Sunday's big win over #3 Emory, the Maroons have now won NINE straight matches.
Audrey Scrafford earned her second-straight UAA Athlete of the Week award after last week's 4-0 mark for the Maroons. Scrafford was the lead offensive force with 3.23 kills per set while hitting .278 overall. She posted 14 kills against University of Rochester and 13 more versus Emory.

NATIONAL LEADERS: MEN'S & WOMEN'S SOCCER

For the first time in UChicago history, BOTH men's and women's soccer teams locked down the No. 1 ranking in NCAA Division III -- at the same time -- in the latest United Soccer Coaches national poll. The two squads are currently a combined 20-0! (Entering Tuesday).

#1 WOMEN'S SOCCER

After obtaining the No. 1 ranking last week, the UChicago women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a gritty 2-1 win over Wheaton and then topped Rochester 3-0 to kick off UAA play.

Freshman Katie Jasminski netted a goal in Saturday's win at Rochester, giving the rookie four goals so far in 2017.
Senior Kelsey Moore gave Chicago the game-winner against Wheaton, scoring in the 59th after the Thunder tied up the game early in the second half.

#1 MEN'S SOCCER

The UChicago men's squad held the No. 1 ranking for the third-straight week, defeating Benedictine and Rochester in a pair of road matches.

Junior Matthew Koh nabbed UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week honors after netting two of the Maroon's four goals in Saturday's 4-1 win at Rochester to kick off UAA play.
A week prior, it was Max Lopez who earned his third UAA Offensive Athlete of the Week honor. He leads the Maroons with 13 goals, including seven game-winners.

Freshman Carter Romero scored twice at Benedictine to help the Maroons pick up a 3-1 win after falling behind by a goal early. Romero currently has four goals and three assists on the year.

FOOTBALL

The Maroons returned home to Stagg Field for a HUGE win, exploding for 55 points in Saturday's victory over Cornell College.

UCHICAGO 55, CORNELL 10

The Maroons offense exploded for 37 FIRST QUARTER points en route to a huge win over the Rams to improve to 2-2 on the season.

  • Rookie QB Campbell Garrett threw for 253 yards on 11-of-19 passing with three TDs and zero interceptions.
  • Chandler Carroll had a crazy first quarter, recording 148 total yards and rushing for three TDs to kickstart the Maroon offense. He finished with 136 yards rushing 36 yards receiving.
  • Dante Nepa led the receiving corp with three catches for 92 yards, his biggest a 70-yard TD in the second quarter. Teammate Trevor Anderson also had a big grab, a 71-yard TD catch in the first frame.
  • Jackson Ross had nine tackles, Henry Winebrake had eight and Ryan Montgomery added seven tackles to lead a defense that held the Rams to just 10 points.

NEXT GAME (MIDWEST CONFERENCE DIVISIONAL OPENER)

Saturday, Oct. 7: Lawrence at UChicago, 1 PM CT

Rookie quarterback Campbell Garrett had his best game of the year in the Sept. 30 win, throwing for 253 yards on 11-of-19 passing with three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
Chandler Carroll totaled 148 of offense and ran for three touchdowns in the first quarter alone in Saturday's win.
Jeremy Vincent had a stellar game defensively, recording two interceptions and three tackles. The performance earned him both Midwest Conference and University Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Week honors.
A week prior, Jackson Ross was named the UAA's Defensive Athlete of the Week after a strong performance in a win over Illinois College Sept. 23.

MEN'S TENNIS

The UChicago men's tennis continued its perennial dominance of the ITA Central Regional, sweeping the singles and doubles titles for the fourth-straight year. It also marked the fifth-straight year that the Maroons had finalists in both events.

ALL-AMERICANS

Jeremy Yuan and Tyler Raclin, ITA Central Region Doubles Champs.

The doubles duo of Tyler Raclin & Jeremy Yuan took home the ITA Central Regional title, defeating Washington-St. Louis in a three-set thriller.

It was Yuan again who took the singles title Tuesday, defeating UChicago teammate Erik Kerrigan in three sets in a nearly three-hour match.

Yuan and Raclin, now ITA All-Americans, advance to the national field to compete in the ITA Oracle Cup in Rome, Ga., Oct. 12-15.

CROSS COUNTRY

The UChicago women's team captured the Midwest Intercollegiate team title behind Khia Kurtenbach's first-place finish Friday at Olivet Nazarene.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The Maroon women's cross country team, ranked #6 in NCAA Division III, captured its second meet of the year with a dominant performance at the Midwest Intercollegiate Sept. 29 hosted Olivet Nazarene.

Saturday, Oct. 7: UChicago at Lucian Rosa Invitational, Kenosha, Wis., 10 a.m.

SEPT. 29 RESULTS:

Senior Khia Kurtenbach was all alone at the finish line for the Maroons, finishing the 5K race in a time of 18:23 to win her first meet of the year.
Kelsey Dunn (400), was one of FOUR runners in the Top 10, as she finished fifth with a time of 18:56.
Other top 10 finishers included Claire Costelloe (fourth, 18:48) and Cassidy McPherson (9th, 19:03).

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The Maroon Men's Cross Country team put together a strong finish at the Midwest Intercollegiate, taking second place behind North Central.

Saturday, Oct. 7: UChicago at Lucian Rosa Invitational, Kenosha, Wis., 10 a.m.

SEPT. 29 RESULTS:

Rookie Ryan Cutter (377) was again the top finisher for the men's team, finishing the 8K race in a time of 25:27 to take seventh overall. Jacob Gosselin (380) scored for UChicago, placing 22nd with a time of 26:13.
