*one, two, three or four week options available

Come explore the rich tradition of Guinean dance and drum with master artists. Experiencing Guinean dance and drum in this authentic immersion experience will undoubtedly shape and deepen your understanding of the form. Please join Mohamed Tounkara and Tounkara Dance & Drum as Camp Matam takes place in the thrilling city of Conakry, Guinea, West Africa, the tranquil island of Soro, and includes two overland excursions into inland Guinea.

Our adventure will take us to the indescribably beautiful Fouta Djallon via Kindia. We will visit the Boke region and it's gorgeous beaches as well as other overland and island experiences.

Weekdays will consist of two dance classes taught by master teacher and Les Ballets Africains company member, Aly Mara. It will be structured similarly to that of classes in North America with a warm up and across the floor. The classes will focus on traditional Guinean rhythms in their purest form. Each class will feature live accompaniment and lots of sweat. Dancers are also encouraged to participate in the daily drum class to enrich their experience while in Guinea. There will be a bonus hour each day to further explore the culture through language, song and the oral tradition of the Griots.

The drum classes will be divided into groups depending upon level of experience. Drummers are also encouraged to either join the dance classes as a percussionist or dancer. As a percussionist, the dance classes will be your opportunity to practice as Mohamed and local artists will continue working with you during that time. If you play djembe, this is is also a fantastic opportunity to hone your skills on the doundouns or even perhaps the balafon! Drummers and dancers will participate in the daily bonus hour, deepening their connection to Guinean culture through language, song and the oral tradition of storytelling.

The camp is four weeks in length, however, you may register for one, two, three or four weeks. Pricing is based upon your length of stay and arrival/departure times can be flexible.

I had never experienced travelling in West Africa... I did not predict the deep and profound impact this experience would have on my life. I connected with people that shared not only their love of dance and drum with me, but who shared themselves. They were caring, generous and accepting. I did not predict how this would shape who I have become. I am truly humbled and thankful for these incredible experiences.
