Weekdays will consist of two dance classes taught by master teacher and Les Ballets Africains company member, Aly Mara. It will be structured similarly to that of classes in North America with a warm up and across the floor. The classes will focus on traditional Guinean rhythms in their purest form. Each class will feature live accompaniment and lots of sweat. Dancers are also encouraged to participate in the daily drum class to enrich their experience while in Guinea. There will be a bonus hour each day to further explore the culture through language, song and the oral tradition of the Griots.
The drum classes will be divided into groups depending upon level of experience. Drummers are also encouraged to either join the dance classes as a percussionist or dancer. As a percussionist, the dance classes will be your opportunity to practice as Mohamed and local artists will continue working with you during that time. If you play djembe, this is is also a fantastic opportunity to hone your skills on the doundouns or even perhaps the balafon! Drummers and dancers will participate in the daily bonus hour, deepening their connection to Guinean culture through language, song and the oral tradition of storytelling.
