Diversity in Beauty

Cheslie Kryst as Miss USA 2019, Toni-Ann Singh as Miss World 2019, Zozibini Tunzi as Miss Universe 2019, Nia Franklin as Miss America 2019, and Kaliegh Garris as Miss Teen USA 2019

The five black women listed above currently hold five of the biggest beauty pageant titles in the United States and the world. This is the first time that black women have held all of these five titles at once.

Facts about the Queens:
  • Cheslie Kryst, Miss USA and Nia Franklin, Miss America are both from North Franklin, Miss America are from North Carolina. Kryst is from Charlotte, NC and Franklin is from Winston-Salem, NC.
  • 2019: First time in history, Miss Universe is a woman with natural hair, Zozibini Tunzi.
  • Kaliegh Garris created “We Are People 1st” in honor of her older sister who has multiple disabilities. She began the movement to educate youth how to respectfully speak to people with a health issue or disability.
  • Toni-Ann Singh is the fourth woman from Jamaica to win Miss World. 
Facts about beauty pageants:
  • Black women were once banned from participation in major beauty pageants, including Miss America and Miss USA.
  • 1970: Cheryl Browne represented Iowa at Miss America.
  • 1977: Janelle Commissiong earned the title as the first Black Miss Universe
  • 1983: Vanessa Williams became the first Black Miss America
  • 1990: The first Black Miss USA contestant, Carole Anne-Marie Gist, was crowned
  • 1991: Janel Bishop became the first black Miss Teen USA.

2020 Black History Month: African Americans And The Vote

This year marks the centennial of the Nineteenth Amendment for women’s suffrage and the sesquicentennial of the Fifteenth Amendment giving black men the right to vote after the Civil War. Therefore, Forsyth County Library's theme for this year’s Black History Month is a celebration of the rich and long history of the vote for black men and women.

At the Forsyth County Public Library, we are excited to participate in this celebration with you and we invite you to all of our featured programs. Download our full calendar of programs and events across all our branches for the months of January, February and March.

Skate Away the Evening!

Participants meet in the EB reception room at 6:30 pm

Break out of Salem for the evening to put on some skates and roll the day away! Salem will be hosting a roller-skating outing on February 22, 2020, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm. Salem will leave the school at 6:30 pm and return to school by 9:30 pm. This activity is open to all Salem Academy students. There are food and drink concessions served at the skating rink, so please bring additional money if you would like to make any purchases.

Shuttle Stops: Hanes Mall, Target, Wal-mart, & Thruway

*The 5:00 pm shuttle is the last pick up round for students. The shuttle returns to school by 6:00 pm.

Students may not take any other transportation that is not provided by the school.
