Athletic Department Updates Winter SEASON RECAP

BOYS BASKETBALL

The boys basketball team finished the regular season with a 16-10 overall record. They finished tied for 4th place in the SWSC blue division.
Senior basketball players were honored before the February 16th game vs. Lockport. The Eagles defeated Lockport 48-45 in overtime.
The Eagles start their playoff run on Tuesday, February 27th vs. Crete-Monee. The game will be played at Reavis High School at 7:30 p.m. Good luck!

GIRLS BASKETBALL

The girls basketball team finished their season with a 11-18 overall record. They finished in 6th place in the SWSC blue division. The Eagle's season wrapped up with a loss to Mother McAuley in IHSA Regional semifinal game.
Destiny Antione connected on 10 three point attempts during the Regional three point contest. She had the top score of all 20 contestants!
Seniors Morgan McAullife, Erin Greenfield and Nicole Poole played a large role in the success the Eagle's experienced this past season. Their leadership will be missed next year.

GYMNASTICS

The girls gymnastics team earned a share of the SWSC Championship this season. Carl Sandburg hosted the IHSA Sectional and finished in 4th place. The Eagles sent two gymnasts, Taylor Tally and Maddie Giglio, to State.

GIRLS BOWLING

The girls bowling team had an incredibly successful season. Accomplishments include winning the school's first ever Regional Championship, finishing third at Sectionals and advancing to State as a team. Their season ended with a 14th place finish at the State Finals.

BOYS SWIMMING

The boys swim and dive team captured the SWSC blue division championship on February 3rd at Stagg High School
Sandburg hosted the IHSA Sectional where the Eagles took home the Sectional Title! This is the third consecutive year that the Eagles have won Sectionals.
Best of luck to our swimmers and diver as they compete in the IHSA State Finals.

NEXT COMPETITION:

  • FEBRUARY 23 and 24: IHSA State at Evanston High School.

COMPETITIVE CHEER

The cheer team finished their season by winning the SWSC Championship, taking 1st place at the Andrew Sectional and finishing 4th overall at the IHSA State Finals.

COMPETITIVE DANCE

For a fourth year in a row, the Eaglettes won the SWSC Championship. The team took 5th place at the IHSA sectional which qualified them for the IHSA State Finals.
The Eaglette's season ended with a 27th place finish at the IHSA State Finals.

WRESTLING

The Eagles captured the Regional Team Title on February 3rd. Pat Nolan (132 lbs) and Alex Hirschfield (182 lbs) won their weight class. The Eagles also recorded five second place finishes and four third place finishes.
IHSA Regional Champions!
The Eagles competed in the Hinsdale Central Sectional February 10th. Pat Nolan finished in 3rd place and Mike Amedeo took 2nd. By placing 2nd and 3rd, both athletes qualified for State.
Pat Nolan earned All-State honors with a 4th place finish at the IHSA State FInals meet in Champaign, IL. This is the second consecutive year that Nolan has earned All-State honors.

NICK FOTOPOLOUS

What is your role at Sandburg? How long have you been at Sandburg, and how long have you been coaching your current sport?

I am an English teacher- I teach English to students who are learning it for the first time. This is my 6th year at Sandburg and my 6th year coaching basketball. 4 with the boys and 2 years as the head girls basketball coach. I also coach baseball in my 4th season here at Sandburg.

What is your best memory from coaching at CSHS?

I have a few favorite coaching memories! One of my favorite memories was when the boys basketball team beat HF (who was #1 seed at the time) to go to the regional championship. Another favorite memory was the exciting playoff run our baseball team made last season. Finally, getting the chance to be the head girls basketball coach and working with our fantastic student athletes.

If you didn't work in education what would you want to be doing?

If I did not work in education I would be involved in the field of law enforcement. My brother and dad are both police officers.

What is your dream vacation destination?

Any place warm with a beach and the ocean.

What is an interesting fact that someone would not know about you?

An interesting fact about me is I am a huge Cubs fan and have season tickets! Go Cubbies!
