OGLING AURORAS BY GABI SWAMY

WHAT IS AN AURORA, AND WHERE ARE THEY SEEN?

An aurora is a beautiful, unique light, created by the suns energetic particles. Just looking at this beautiful light doesn't really scream "magnetism" to me until I started researching. There are two types, Aurora Borealis, the Auroras in the north pole area, and Aurora Australis, the Auroras in the south pole area.

Aurora Borealis

HOW ARE THEY MADE?

Auroras caused by the sun. The sun sends heat, light, energetic particles to our earth but you probably don't see them because our magnetic field protect us. This is called solar wind and when the sun sends lots of energetic particles towards our earth, they travel down our magnetic field lines and to the north and south poles. Only because our magnetic field changes, when the particles are in our magnetosphere, they can accelerate down towards our atmosphere.

WHAT CAUSES AURORAS TO GET THEIR COLOR?

When the energetic particles are coming down from the sun, they interact with gases on the way here. Interacting with Oxygen causes the green and red color, and interacting with Nitrogen causes a blue or a purple.

DO OTHER PLANETS GET AURORAS TOO?

Gas planets such as Neptune, Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus all witness auroras them because of the way they are made. In the proses of making an aurora, the energetic particles in our atmosphere interact with gases such as Nitrogen and Oxygen creating its colors, but because gas planets have gas in their atmosphere, it causes beautiful auroras.

Did you know?

Did you know that the word Aurora comes from the Latin word for "Sunrise" or the Roman godess of dawn .
