Here is an outline with ideas for your upcoming week away as you head north to historic Charleston, SC. I planned you all leaving Monday, Dec 5 and returning home Saturday, Dec 10. Those days can easily be changed. Here are some ideas, let me know when you want to book.
Day 1: drive approx 2 hours to St Mary's, GA. Take the ferry boat to Cumberland Island and visit the island, wild horses and more!
Hotel Options.... all have free breakfast...
In St Mary's- Option 1: Stay at the Riverview Hotel. Beds are 2 DOUBLE beds and may be a tighter squeeze; however you will not be your room much as this will be a layover night after visiting Cumberland Island all day. Across the street from the boat dock to Cumberland Island, this is downtown. Current price was $88/night plus tax. Click the link below for more info.
I've added a second option to stay at a chain hotel. Country Inn & Suites is about 20 minutes from the boat launch and is running about $83/night for the night of December 5th. Check it out by clicking below. Rooms are 2 QUEEN beds.
Day 2 would be a nice 3.5 hour drive north to Charleston.
Hotel options would be: stay downtown. Looks like the Hampton Inn has the best price and located almost across the street from the Visitor's Center with access to free public bus/trolley around the historic district. Below is a link to the Hampton Inn's website. Running about $179/night. Parking is $17/night. All downtown hotels will have a parking fee.
A second option is to stay about 20 minutes north of downtown. I found a Country Inn and Suites for $117/night. 2 queen beds and it has an indoor heated pool. Parking is FREE. if you stayed a little out of town, you'll pay less and can get into town (we'll look at free or cheap parking if you chose this) and then still use the free public trolley system. Here is the link to the Country Inn and Suites.
Here is the link for the free trolley.
Days 2-6, if you stay Tuesday Dec 6- Saturday Dec 10 would be spent in and around Charleston, SC. You can relax at your hotel, visit historic downtown, the aquarium, the USS Yorktown, plantations and more!
Well, that is a start. here is a link to 10 things to do with kids. The water taxi would be fun and so would the USS Yorktown, especially for the big boys- and Chase. The Children's Museum would be fun for all and Boone Plantation looks like would have some beautiful tree lined paths. Apparently Edgar Allen Poe lived nearby and has a restaurant named after him.
That's a start. Let me know what you think. -Michelle
