How to become one: It requires a high school diploma and a college degree. Most detectives must graduate from their agency's training academy by completing on-the-job training. You must be a U.S citizen usually at least 21 years of age, and able to meet rigorous physical and personal qualification standers. A felony conviction or drug use may disqualify the person.

How much they make: The median annual wage for police and detectives as $60,270 per year in May of 2015. The median wage is that half of the workers in an occupation earn more or less than. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $34,170 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $100,560 per year.
