The Spatial Experience

• When I entered the building, I immediately felt small. Not in a bad way, of course, but because it was grand. Granted, in past experiences, I’ve seen bigger theatres, the stage setup with the gears and beds made it look bigger than it actually was. When the lights dimmed and the audience quieted, I was ready to experience something I had no prior knowledge about – in all exciting. It is perhaps the experience and ability to jump into something new that helps facilitate the Good Life.

The Social Experience

• To prepare for the performance, I made sure I finished all my tasks on time, so that I did not arrive late. I also made sure to come with a full stomach so I was not distracted by a growling stomach. I attended the performance alone. However, I did have conversations with the girls who sat next to me in the theatre. We talked about our expectations of the show – maybe we were going to experience a comedy or something too serious. Sharing experiences and exchanging expectations is a part of the Good Life because it allows us to connect to others in our lives, even strangers, at a personal level.

The Cultural and Intellectual Experience

• The central issue in this story is the battle between beliefs: religion, law, family, and society. We also get insight in the world of theatre through the interactions of Sarah’s fascination of the captivity of audience and Michaud’s interest towards the “poor life”. Even Casgrin makes points about the church when he berates Michaud and Talbot. The performance brought light, especially to many social hypocrisies of today’s world. Sarah and Talbot makes points about the theatre and the people it attracts: the privileged exploiting the misfortunes of others. Casgrin’s, Michaud’s, and Talbot’s entire ordeal dealt with the often shushed crimes of the church (considering the location and time period). Even child labor is a major plot device in this performance. The performance did change my views about the theatre. It is art, after all. And because it is art, it usually has purpose; to teach the audience something.

The Emotional Experience

• The Divine: A Play for Sarah Bernhardt provides us an opportunity to reflect. We see it with the main cast at the shoe factory. All point the flaws in each other’s logic. When we come to terms with the negative in our lives, we accept the events and processes in our lives instead of blindly ignoring them. When we ignore the hypocrisies and bad qualities of ourselves and our lives, we generally are unhappy people – running away from reality. We have to face it, to achieve a “Good Life”
