Entrenching tools can save your life because you can dig until the enemy cant shoot you or you can get hit by shrapnel. Sometimes you will need to dig your own trench hastily before the enemy comes, also you may use this tool for hand to hand combat("10 Things").

Second most important thing is a steel helmet

Because of new technology the army had to get more protection for soldiers so they made the steel helmet. At first the British used cloth hat witch offered no protection on the head, then they moved on to the steel helmet witch is shown on top. This steel helmet protected mostly from gun fire and shrapnel. These helmets reduced the head injury by 75%("10 Things").

One of the best things to have is a gas mask

Gas masks are useful so that you don't breath in deadly toxins from deadly chemicals. In 1915 the Germans used gas in this war they used the gasses the break the deadlock in the western front, as the gas warfare continued there came protection like the gas mask at the top. Side effects of breathing in the deadly gasses may be burning lungs, skin blisters and more terrible things("10 Things").

These emergency kits can save your life or someone else's. Soldiers like you have to use these under extreme conditions for example when you run up the trench you will have to drag one of the injured and get them back to shape before they die. Some regiments will use these in the heat of battle but every soldier must have one of these("10 Things").

Finally you will need a Bayonet.
