Concussions in Football By: Pedro Pedraza

In recent history, American football has dominated T.V ratings and has been deemed the most popular sport in the United States. But at what cost? For decades’, players of all ages have sacrificed their bodies not fully understanding the consequences

What is a Concussion?

What is a concussion? A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury. Concussions can be caused by hard blows to the head and body.

What is CTE?

CTE, is a degenerative brain disease found in many former college football and N.F.L players.

How CTE Has Affected The Lives of NFL Players

Mike Webster was a hall of fame football player for the Pittsburg Steelers. A legend to the people in his city, Webster played the center position and was known for his rough and physical style of play. Webster’s Hall of fame career was followed by years of physical and psychological chaos, which included homelessness (Litsky). He was presumed dead at the age of 50 after suffering a heart attack.

Junior Seau Case

Junior Seau was one of the premier linebackers in NFL History, and like Webster, many adored him. Junior Seau died May 2nd, 2012 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest at the age of 43, his death was ruled a suicide. CTE was reported to be a primary factor.

  • Players should start learning proper tackling techniques from youth.
  • Dr. Swartz's theory suggests that players would be more conscious of their head placement and technique when practicing if they did so without any protection.
  • Neuroscientist Raymond Colello theorized the use of magnets in football helmets to help lower the speed at which collisions in football occur

Overall, it is impossible to deny the great impact concussions and CTE have had on football, its fans, the players, and their families alike. The discovery of these injuries and long term effects have made it imperative for us to try and find a solution where a player can be assured his future will not be compromised for playing a sport most of us grew up appreciating. Whether it’s through knowledge, proper training methods, or the implementation of the theories listed above we must arrive at a solution to protect the players of a sport Americans hold so dearly.
