Christianity and Islam Trevor Young

Founder of Christianity is Jesus Christ. Before Christianity Jesus was just an apostle.

The known age of Jesus Christ is not known but the time takes place in the early first century. This occurred on the day of Jesus’s death and the fallowing of his resurrection. Now Jesus taught his followers about Christianity. When Christianity first arose and was developing into a religion it was strongly rejected by everyone. They killed many people trying to share the religion. It took time for people to believe in this new idea/religion. After Jesus was killed he was put into a tomb and they left him the tomb to be in the tomb forever. After some time, they opened the tomb and he was gone. This was about the time many people realized that Jesus was gone and this was when Christianity took off. After the resurrection of Jesus Christ people believed he was still alive and they didn’t take over but instead shared his word to others. Paul and Peter were the main peope of Christianity.

Martin Luther was born in Germany November 10, 1483. Luther started school at the age of seven. He gained his Masters of Arts degree in grammar, logic, rhetoric, and metaphysics in 1501. In 1505 Martin Luther had a life changing experience. He was in a terrible thunderstorm where he was beyond scared for his life. He cried out to St. Anne “Save me, St. Anne, and I’ll become a monk!”. He feared hell and God’s wrath and he also thought that being a monastery would bring him salvation. He became a monk.In January 1521, Martin Luther was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church. On May 8, 1521 The council banned Luther’s writings and declaring him a convicted heretic. At this point he was a wanted man. Luther started hiding from the people wanting to kill him. While in hiding he translated the New Testament into German so that ordinary people could study God’s word. Luther ignored the council. In long terms Luther started a new church of his own.

Today there are about 2.2 billion Christians.

Christianity is expected to grow from about 2.17 billion to 2.92 billion composing about 31% of the world population. About 6 out of 10 people will be Christian or Muslim. How is Christianity growing?

From the around 2000 to 2005 the growth of Christianity was 500%. This growth is possible because of the way Christianity is divided into smaller religions. This has been a steady growth from long ago to now. This growth is predicted to continue for years in. How is this possible? America and Europe used to make up about 80% of all Christians. Today there is about 40% (Both Europe and America) that makes up Christianity. The other 60% is now coming from Latin America and Africa. There was a huge growth that happened there that hasn’t happened in over a 1000 years. Both South and East Asia grew in size dramatically. This was a shift from Europe to the Global South.

Creator of Islam -- Abū al-Qāsim Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim. Islam is known to have first been around in the year 610. Within ten years Muhammad had gained so many followers that he was able to return and conquer Mecca. In the year 632 Muhummad died.

Muhammad's message was especially well received by the poor and slaves. But many people were opposed to his message. This opposition only seemed to make him more determined. After years of publicly promoting his ideas, he became so disliked that some began plotting his murder. He ended up moving cities and gathering converts from the city of Medina. Years later Muhammad returned to Mecca with 1500 some converts. He forcefully converted most of the Arabian Peninsula and had a small empire.

Before Islam, Muhammad fallowed a form of paganism. In this belief system, Allah was the creator god and the supreme god of the pre-Islamic Arabs. However, numerous intermediaries were set below Allah such as his daughters "Allat", "AlUzza" and "Manat" who would intercede on behalf of their worshippers.

After the death of Muhammad, a close companion of Muhammad, Abu Bakr, took over. Many people supported him. He became the first caliph. Some believed that he shouldn’t have taken over and that it should have been his son-in-law, Ali ibn Talib. In the long run Abu took over the rum the empire.

The split of Islam was caused after the death of Muhammad in 632. The leadership of Islam could not be decided who it went to, Abu Bakr(Sunii) or Ali ibn Talib (Shiite). Ali claimed to be the cousin, adopted son, first son, and husband of Muhammad’s daughter Fatima. Both sides (Shia and Sunni) believed that their man was designated by Muhammad to be “in charge”. This led to the two sides going their ways and fallowing their guy.

Another reason for the split were for the different beliefs that both sides had. Sunni refers to the oral traditions of the Koran – a body of work similar to the Jewish Talmud. Sunnis believe that the position of Caliph should be a position to which one is elected by the religious leaders of the Islamic community, and not dependent on direct lineage from Mohammed.

Shiite comes from the word shia, which means “the party (of Ali).” They are mostly found in Iran and Iraq, and among the Palestinians. They consider certain direct descendants of Ali (Imams) infallible and the true descendants of Muhammad. Ali was the first Imam, then from there on it went down from person to person. This bloodline ended with the 12th Imam, who went into hiding in 940. They believe that someday he will emerge again and will reassert as the leader of the Islamic world. Of course on the meantime they have a leader to serve until his return.

The five Beliefs of Islam

Shahadah – Reciting Muslim profession of faith

Salat Performing ritual prayers five times a day

Zakat – Paying of alms tacx to benefit the poor and the needy

Sawm – fasting during the month of Ramadan

Hajj – pilgrimage to Mecca

Islam spread very quickly. Many people were forced into Islam due to wars. Islamic fallowers are to protect their faith, spread it, and defend it against attack. Many people who did not believe often began to fallow Islam. The big picture here is that wars were the main cause of Islam spreading so fast. Once they had power over the land, those non-believers then became Islam.

In the world today there are about 2.2 Billion people in the world today.

There are about 1.6 Billion Islam’s in the world today

Looking at past years, Islam will continue to grow as Atheist start to convert in places such as the United States and France. Islam will grow because of war. Many of those who do not believe will be forced to believe.
