Catholic School's Week Parent Appreciation Day 2017

Today you and your parents are going to make and label a model of an animal cell!

Animal cell model

In Science class you have learned that cells are the smallest unit of living matter. They are the "building blocks" of living things. All living things are made of cells---even you!

Examples of living things

Your task is to make a model of an animal cell!

In the bin you will find all of the materials you will need.

Materials
Directions- Part 1

Making the Cell Membrane

Cell membrane
  1. Select a color of PlayDoh and remove it from the container. Break the Playdoh in 1/2
  2. Place 1/2 of the PlayDoh back in the container and put the lid on tightly. Place container in the bin
  3. Knead the PlayDoh until it is soft
  4. "Smoosh" the PlayDoh out into a thin and smooth sheet---large enough to cover the entire rounded part (outer half sphere) of the styrofoam ball
  5. Apply a small amount of glue to the entire outer part of your half sphere
  6. Cover the "gluey" outer half sphere with your sheet of PlayDoh--pushing and smoothing until the entire rounded part is covered all the way to the top edge
  7. You have now made the cell membrane!
  8. Place your half sphere onto your stand---flat, top-side up
Directions Part 2

Making the Nucleus

Nucleus

For this part of your cell model, 2 students will share 1 nucleus. So, you will need to work together!

  1. Select a new color of PlayDoh
  2. Open container and break off a small piece (about the size of a small marble)
  3. Roll this small, marble sized piece of PlayDoh into a ball and set it down on your desk
  4. Select a new color of PlayDoh and take out a piece the size of a large marble
  5. "Smoosh" and flatten this piece of PlayDoh into a small sheet
  6. Completely cover the ball of PlayDoh from step 3 with the flat sheet of PlayDoh
  7. Roll gently between your hands to make this new ball of PlayDoh smooth and round. Do NOT smash it together, just gently roll it between your hands
  8. Use a piece of dental floss to slice the 2-layer ball in half
  9. Share the other half with a person at your table
  10. You have made your nucleus!
Directions- Part 3

Use textbook page A-9 as your guide and continue making the remaining parts (organelles) of the animal cell.

  1. chromosomes
  2. vacuole
  3. mitochondrion

Use the index cards and toothpicks to label all of the parts of the cell you see on page A9

  1. nucleus
  2. chromosomes
  3. vacuole
  4. cell membrane
  5. cytoplasm
  6. mitochondrion
