Coastal Commission to Consider Prohibiting New Short Term Lodging Units in Laguna Beach Residential Districts Wednesday

Coastal Commission Approval of City's Local Coastal Plan Amendment Would Preserve Laguna Beach Residential Neighborhoods

On Wednesday morning, the California Coastal Commission (CCC) will consider approving an amendment to the Laguna Beach Local Coastal Plan (LCP) that will prohibit any new Short Term Lodging in the R-1, R-2 and R-3 residential districts.

If approved, the proposed LCP amendment is a substantial improvement over the existing regulations and will help preserve the City's long-term housing.

The LCP Amendment Before the Coastal Commission Includes:

  • No new Short Term Lodging Units in the City's residential districts (R-1, R-2, or R-3);
  • New restrictions placed on the number of housing units that can be converted to Short Term Lodging in the mixed use and commercial districts.

"The proposed LCP amendment is a substantial improvement over the existing regulations from the perspective of preserving the City’s long-term housing," said Marc Wiener, Laguna Beach Director of Community Development. "If this LCP is denied, many more housing units located in the residential districts could potentially be converted to Short Term Lodging with no limitations as is currently allowed."
