The picture below are of the 'Okakagbe Masquerade Costume' which was made by Lawrence Ajanaku in 2003. This artwork represents one of Ancient Mother's retainers. The Edo people would perform as ensembles as a manifestation of forest spirits. Viewing this costume in person makes a huge difference, because of the different materials used, the different colors, and the overall form. In person, the art seems amazing and bright. I felt more connected to the history being told by the costume at the museum than I do looking at the pictures. It was also easier to get a sense of the proportions of the costume. Also, it was nice to look at the different textures of the cloth used in making the costume. The skill required to make the costume made me think about the importance that people place on tradition, history, and culture. This costume made me feel happy, it made me smile because I can imagine someone wearing the colorful costume and dancing around.

Design of the Museum

The David A. Cofrin Asian Art Wing Rock Garden was my favorite wing of the museum. I think I liked the garden because it was outside and it was peaceful. I particularly liked the it because not many people in Florida have rock gardens, so it provided a nice contrast to typical Florida scenery. I also like the placement of the rocks; there were pathways to walk on to get a closer look. On the ground there were tiny rocks that were raked so that there were wavy lines on the ground. The wavy lines made a nice contrast to the harsh lines of the rocks. This wing of the museum was quiet and relaxing. The benches that were there gave me a nice spot to sit and look at the garden.

Art and Core Values

The photograph "I am Not a Persian Carpet #2" taken by Aphrodite Desiree Navab is very thought provoking. This artwork tells a lot about values. The artist took this picture to challenge Islamic taboos on the visibility of women and to show that women are not commodities. Persian carpets are a commodity that people want. These carpets are exported to lots of places. This photo displays sadness, defiance, and pride. The artists choice to only print the design on one portion of the body is significant. It shows that women's accessories are a part of women, not their entirety. The stamping also encourages people to look below the surface and to take women more seriously. This art instills awe and sadness in me. I feel awe that women have the strength to stand up for themselves in difficult situations where they are treated as possessions. At the same time I feel sad that in some places women aren't treated the same as men. I think its terrible to treat women as commodities that they can control. This photo gives me hope that people will change.

Art and the Good Life

This silver print is of 'A thanksgiving prayer to the Mixe god Kioga in gratitude for the good harvest, Oaxaca, Mexico' by Sebastiao Salgado. Salgado is a photojournalist that focuses on the realities of daily life of indigenous and marginalized people. In this picture two people are thanking the Mixe god for a good harvest. This picture embodies the theme of celebrating life. Since the people are thanking their god for a good harvest, they know that there were chances of having a bad harvest; because they were spared from a bad harvest, they are celebrating their success. The people seem to be genuinely enjoying nature in this picture. It also looks as if the people are trying to embrace nature. This adds to my understanding of the theme by making me understand that although there are hard times, it is important to let go and be thankful and happy for the good times. Overall, this picture makes me feel happy because the scene in the picture is peaceful yet joyous.
